EPISODE 22 — SAGE HOULE Sage Houle

This one is special. Sage and Connor have been hunting, fishing and running the mountains together since boyhood in Gunnison. Nearly 30 years later, they’re still at it.

Sage, owner of Pie-Zans Pizzeria in Gunnison, is a true jack-of-all-trades outdoorsman. From chasing big game and birds to giant lake trout and small-stream fly fishing, he’s spent a lifetime learning every corner of the outdoors—and has taken some absolutely incredible animals along the way.

We get into giant elk, mule deer, and his Alaska adventures chasing moose, caribou, Sitka blacktail and brown bear, and plenty of hard-earned elk knowledge for our SEPTEMBER IS COMING series.

Almost 30 years of friendship and a hell of a lot of stories from the mountains.

EP. 021 TRADITIONAL MULE DEER w/ Scott Hargrove
-
72 years young, and Scott Hargrove is still chasing high-country mule deer the hard way—with a South Cox recurve in hand.

While most hunters are thinking about taking the shot at 50 yards, Scott is just getting started.

In Episode 21 of Wolverine & the Warthog, Scott takes us through a lifetime of bowhunting wisdom—from growing up in Southern California to decades spent stalking Colorado’s high country. We dive into when to make a stalk, when to back out, reading mule deer behavior, traditional archery, and the mindset that’s kept him hunting at the highest level for generations.

This is the third mule deer installment in our September Is Coming series, and it’s packed with timeless lessons from a true legend.

EP. 020 Elk Communication and Calling w/ Hunter Enloe
-
September is coming… and the mountains are about to come alive.

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a screaming bull echoing through the timber, and few people are more passionate about that conversation than Hunter Enloe.

Hunter joined us again to dive deep into elk communication—his favorite way to hunt. We discuss when to challenge a herd bull, how to pull a bull away from his cows, combining spot-and-stalk tactics with aggressive calling, reading a bull’s attitude, and adapting your calling to the situation instead of relying on one sequence.

Throughout the episode, Hunter demonstrates calling scenarios using Gene Taylors Sporting Goods new Riven Calls RIVEN , explaining not just what to say, but why he’s saying it. Whether you’re new to elk hunting or have spent years chasing bugles, there’s something in this conversation that can make you more effective this September.

Hunter is a wealth of knowledge, and we’re thankful he took the time to share it with us. We had an absolute blast recording this one, and we hope you enjoy watching and listening as much as we enjoyed making it.

EPISODE 019 | BRAD PHELPS | September is Coming Series: Elk Hunting Part 1

Colorado’s elk story isn’t just history for Brad Phelps—it’s family history.

When 11 elk were unloaded from a train at the Iola stockyards in the early 1900s, Brad’s grandparents were there. They helped nurse the exhausted animals back to health before they were released into the Gunnison Basin. Brad shares the firsthand oral account passed down by his grandmother, offering a rare connection to one of the most important moments in Colorado’s elk restoration.

Brad is a fourth-generation Gunnison cattle rancher, lifelong elk hunter, guide, former Colorado Wildlife Commissioner, conservationist, and the hunter behind a legendary 373” Colorado bull.

From the origins of Colorado’s elk herd to today’s challenges in elk management, this conversation is packed with history, unforgettable stories, and a lifetime of hard-earned knowledge.

It was an honor to have one of our best friends on the pod, to break into the elk part of this series! If you care about elk, the West, and preserving its heritage, don’t miss this one.
