"I decided that no matter what it looked like, I was going to open a bookstore so that I could contribute in some small way and stand up for intellectual freedom in the U.S.," said 33-year-old Amber Salazar, owner of Banned Wagon Books, a pop-up store she sets up everywhere from wineries to coffee shops.

Her store sells censored works such as Maia Kobabe's “Gender Queer,” Angie Thomas' “The Hate U Give” and Toni Morrison's “Beloved.”

New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander is now a Little Free Library steward! https://lflib.org/kwame-alexander

Kwame unveiled the first of 10 Little Free Libraries honoring the 10th anniversary of his groundbreaking novel THE CROSSOVER.

Each library will be installed in a location significant to Kwame’s personal and literary journey. This first installation stands on land purchased and farmed by Alexander’s great-great-grandfather in the aftermath of the Civil War—an especially meaningful site to begin the initiative.

Established in 1958, National Library Week celebrates the vital role libraries play in our communities. April 8 is National Library Workers Appreciation Day—more important now than ever.

This week's featured artwork, The Libraries Are Appreciated, by Jacob Lawrence, reflects the significance of libraries in African American history and education. It depicts the 124th Street branch of the NY Public Library in Harlem—a space Lawrence often visited to learn what wasn’t taught in public schools.

Lawrence, a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, developed a bold, distinctive style to celebrate community, culture, and the power of learning—especially through libraries.
