Knoxville Man Charged with Arson Following House Fire

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (June 9, 2026) - Deputy State Fire Marshals charged a 25-year-old Knoxville man after he intentionally set fire to his home Saturday night and fled the area.

Shortly before 11:35 p.m. on June 6, 2026, firefighters and emergency personnel responded to a reported house fire at 2223 Kaetzel Road in Knoxville. Deputy State Fire Marshals then responded to the scene and determined the home had been intentionally set on fire.

During the investigation, neighboring residents reported seeing the home's sole occupant, Austin David Brown, walking away from the area shortly after the fire began. Investigators were unable to locate Brown after the on-scene investigation and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant charging him in connection with the fire.

On June 8, 2026, Deputy State Fire Marshals received additional information from a nearby resident, including security camera footage that further corroborated Brown's involvement in the fire.

Later that day, investigators received information that Brown had returned to the area. Deputy State Fire Marshals responded, located him in the 1300 block of Weverton Road in Knoxville, and observed him run into the woods, prompting a search.

Due to the terrain and Brown's prior history with law enforcement, assistance was requested from the Maryland State Police - Aviation Command and Maryland State Police K9 Units. Washington County Sheriff's Office, Maryland deputies were already on scene assisting with the search.

After approximately 40 minutes, Brown surrendered, was taken into custody without incident, and transported to the Washington County Detention Center.

Brown has been charged with first-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property over $1,000, and animal cruelty.

After appearing before a District Court Commissioner, Brown was held without bond.
