The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

Based on the real life Florida reform school that destroyed the lives of thousands of children, Whitehead spins a devastating story about idealism, skepticism, and love that sheds a light on the brutal truth of the Jim Crow South.

Meet the last 3 artists featured in Inheritance.

Simone Elizabeth Saunders |
Canadian textile artist Simone Elizabeth Saunders weaves heritage, history, and imagination into large-scale, immersive tapestries that center the strength and resilience of Black women. Through punch needle and tufting techniques, her work merges technical mastery with poetic storytelling, transforming fabric into living narratives of ancestry, identity, and empowerment.

Tasha Dougé |
Queens-born, Bronx-bred, Haitian-infused artist Tasha Dougé creates conceptual visual and performance works that excavate suppressed histories and honor Black brilliance. Working across installation, photography, and performance, she transforms everyday materials into powerful vessels of memory, activism, and radical love—constructing spaces where erasure is confronted and liberation imagined.

Zanoxolo Slyvestre Mqeku |
South African ceramicist Zanoxolo Slyvestre Mqeku has redefined sand casting, transforming the earth into both collaborator and archive. His sculptural works capture human gesture, environmental rhythm, and ancestral memory, offering meditations on sustainability, presence, and the profound imprint of humanity upon the natural world.

COPPER Magazine

is a carefully curated sensory exhibition which uncovers and celebrates the electric, meaningful, and innovative storytelling from artists of color who work within all artistic mediums. The artists we showcase create a counter-narrative through works driven by culture, religion, political views, and identity, building a community of artistic minds capable and willing to challenge homogenized art.
