Valley Race Park was once part of a proposed joint venture involving Penn National Gaming, which would have given the company a 50% stake in the property and positioned Harlingen for a future that could have included slots and expanded gaming.
Texas never moved forward with legalization, and that opportunity quietly faded away. What could have been a major economic and tourism boost for Harlingen remains a lingering β€œwhat if” in the city’s history.
