Labor Day feels a little different when you're building a homestead.

Because this life is work.

There are animals that need fed whether you're tired or not.

Gardens that don't care if you had a long day.

Food to preserve.

Projects that take twice as long as you thought they would.

And weeds that apparently have absolutely no respect for holidays.

But there's something different about working toward something that's yours.

We're still working the 9–5.

We're still figuring things out.

We're still very much in the middle of building the life we want.

But every garden bed, every animal, every skill we learn and every little thing we produce ourselves is another piece of that future.

So today, we're taking a breath.

The chickens can wait a few minutes.

The garden will survive.

And tomorrow, we'll get back to it.

Happy Labor Day from Homesteading Unhinged.

I'll see you Tuesday.

And when we get back, we're getting back to the real stuff: growing, learning, building, failing, trying again and figuring this homesteading thing out together.

What are you taking a break from today?

This is the part of homesteading I think gets left out.

It's not waking up at sunrise in a linen dress and peacefully collecting eggs every morning.

Sometimes it's rushing home from work because somebody needs fed.

It's realizing you forgot to water something.

It's fighting weeds.

It's losing plants.

It's cleaning animal enclosures when you'd rather be doing literally anything else.

It's harvesting 15 pounds of something and immediately wondering:

“Okay…what the hell am I supposed to do with all of this?”

It's learning something the hard way.

It's trying again.

It's realizing that the thing you were convinced would take 30 minutes somehow consumed your entire Saturday.

And yes…

Sometimes it's standing in the garden wondering why you voluntarily created this much work for yourself.

But then you pick something you grew.

You collect the eggs.

You feed the animals.

You look at everything you've learned to do that you couldn't do a few years ago.

And you realize:

This isn't about creating an easy life.

It's about creating a life where you're capable of doing more for yourself.

Even if you're still working the 9–5.

Even if you're starting with a tiny garden.

Even if you only have chickens.

Even if you're still figuring out what the hell you're doing.

You don't have to build the whole homestead at once.

Start with one thing.

Learn it.

Do it badly.

Get better.

Then add another.

That's how most of us are actually doing this.

What's the most unexpectedly difficult part of homesteading for you?

I want the real answers. Not the Pinterest version.

There is a LOT of homesteading information online.

But sometimes you don't need another perfect tutorial.

You need someone to explain it like you're standing next to them saying:

“Okay…now what do I actually do?”

Because let's be honest, most of us didn't start knowing how to grow food, preserve it, care for animals, build healthy soil, save seeds, make things from scratch or fix every problem that shows up on the homestead.

We're figuring it out.

And that's what I want this page to be about.

Not pretending we have everything mastered.

Not making beginners feel like they're already behind.

Just real skills, real experiences and learning as we go.

So tell me:

What's ONE homesteading skill you wish someone would actually teach you?

Drop it in the comments.

If someone else answers with something you're good at, teach them.

Let's make the comments section useful instead of just saying “following for more.”

And if you're the person who doesn't know where to start yet?

That's okay too.

You're exactly who this page is for.

I don't think rabbits get enough credit as a homestead animal.

They can fit into relatively small spaces, produce manure that can be incredibly useful in the garden, and depending on your goals, they can provide meat, breeding stock or another potential income stream.

But I'm also not going to tell you they're effortless.

They're livestock.

That means there will be cleaning.

There will be feeding.

There will be breeding decisions.

There will be heat management.

There will be days when something goes wrong and you have to figure it out.

And there may be losses. That's one of the harder realities of keeping animals that doesn't make it into the pretty homestead photos.

We're still learning, too.

That's kind of the entire point of Homesteading Unhinged.

I'm not here pretending I've mastered every aspect of homesteading. I'm actively doing it, learning from what works, learning from what doesn't, and sharing the process.

So if you're thinking about getting rabbits, don't just listen to the person telling you how easy they are.

Listen to people who will tell you what the work actually looks like.

And rabbit keepers:

What's the ONE thing you wish you'd known before getting your first rabbits?

Let's build a better beginner resource in the comments.

What's one thing you're struggling with right now?

Not the polished version. The real one.

Maybe your garden isn't producing like you hoped.
Maybe you're fighting pests.
Maybe your soil is a mess.
Maybe you're trying to keep up with animals, work, family, and everything else.
Or maybe you're just wondering where the heck to start.

You don't have to have it all figured out to belong here.

Drop your biggest gardening or homesteading struggle in the comments. Someone in this community may have a solution, a lesson learned, or simply a reminder that you're not the only one dealing with it.

And if you see someone struggling with something you've figured out, jump into their comments and share what helped you.

That's the kind of community I want this to be: real people sharing what actually works, what doesn't, and what we're still figuring out.

So, what's one thing you're struggling with? 🌱
