125 years ago, L. Frank Baum wrote the children’s novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. The written story and film have captured hearts and minds for generations. One way to summarize the story is that a young Kansas farm girl named Dorothy perseveres down a dangerous path to get home, while finding and bringing others in need along with her. An even shorter summary could be that Dorothy perseveres through trials until she reaches home....

My grandparents’ home was a little slice of heaven. Tucked away on a dirt road, surrounded by gardens and live oaks, it was the kind of place where time stretched long and sweet. There were chickens clucking in the yard, rabbits nibbling in shaded pens, and a tire swing tied high in the arms of a giant oak tree. For a city kid like me, it felt like a magic kingdom where the rules of the world softened and wonder came easy....

One of the privileges of my career has been meeting people who embody service in its purest form. They are not motivated by profit, recognition, or convenience. They serve because they feel called to do so, and because they believe their faith requires them to use their gifts for the benefit of others. I came to know one such example through the Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF), an organization dedicated to helping combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star families....

Civic Insights with David Billings If you’ve ever watched a legislator at a local event, you know the routine. They show up at the fundraiser, take a photo with the local civic organizations, congratulate the Eagle Scout, nod sympathetically when residents or city leaders talk about growth pressures—and then head back to Austin where nothing changes. The reality is blunt: Texas lawmakers only act when the right kind of pressure builds—and that pressure has to come from all sides, like a political pressure cooker ready to blow....

“That’s not fair!” It might be that he got more pumpkin spice cookies, or she got more pumpkin spice cupcakes. From an early age we are experts at spotting when someone has more than we do. Even if we were content and comfortable with the amount of pumpkin spice goodies in our lives, or whatever other thing we value, when we see someone else with more, whatever we have is not enough....

We all want the butterfly moment. That glorious unfolding. The part where it all makes sense. Where we stretch our wings and the air feels new. Where the pain has purpose and the struggle has shape. Where we rise, lifted by light, beauty, and becoming. But what we forget, what we rush past, are the caterpillar days. The ones that ache with uncertainty....
