John Eastman – Constitutional Law Scholar & Former Law Clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas
Dr. John Eastman is a constitutional law scholar, attorney, and public policy advocate known for his expertise in the American founding, federalism, and the separation of powers. He is the founder of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence and a former Dean of Chapman University’s Fowler School of Law. Eastman also served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Over the course of his career, he has argued multiple cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and served as a legal advisor on a range of constitutional matters, including religious liberty, immigration, and election law. He has been affiliated with The Claremont Institute, where he has contributed extensively to constitutional interpretation and the defense of originalism.
In recent years, Eastman has become a prominent and controversial figure for his legal analysis surrounding the 2020 presidential election and the Vice President’s role in certifying electoral votes. His legal memos and subsequent prosecution have ignited national debate over free speech, legal ethics, and the boundaries of legitimate constitutional discourse.
Despite mounting legal challenges, Eastman continues to defend what he calls the “republican principles” of self-governance and the original intent of the Constitution.
Dr. John C. Eastman is Founding Director of the Claremont Institute’s Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence; Senior Fellow of the Claremont Institute; and until January 2021 served as the Henry Salvatori Professor of Law & Community Service at Chapman University’s Dale E. Fowler School of Law.
From 1996 to 1997 he served as a law clerk with the Honorable Justice Clarence Thomas in the United States Supreme Court. After concluding his clerkships, Dr. Eastman took a position with Kirkland & Ellis in Los Angeles until 1999.
In the courtroom, Dr. Eastman has represented seventeen parties before the Supreme Court of the United States. He has also represented amici curiae in over 150 cases before the Supreme Court in cases such as Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores (2014), Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Burwell (2014), Harris v.
