#Scientist of the Day….. “John Michael Bishop”…
==========================================

John Michael Bishop (Born on Today’s date in 1936):

#JohnMichaelBishop is an #American #virologist who shared (with co-worker Harold Varmus) of the Nobel Prize for #Physiology or Medicine in 1989 for achievements in clarifying the cellular origins of retroviral oncogenes associated with cancer. They showed that normal genes under certain circumstances can cause cancer, and this new insight profoundly changed the understanding of cancer. When #retroviridae introduce genes into the DNA of host cells, normal cell growth, division or differentiation results in mutations creating cancer genes, known as oncogenes. Such oncogenes can then become part of the host’s own DNA.

“Science now finds itself in #paradoxical strife with society: admired but mistrusted; offering hope for the future but creating ambiguous choice; richly supported yet unable to fulfill all its promise; boasting remarkable advances but criticized for not serving more directly the goals of society”.
— J. Michael Bishop

Scientist of the Day….. “Ruth Sager”…
--------------------------------------------
Ruth Sager (Born on Today’s date in 1918):

#American cellular geneticist whose #research (1950's - 60's) altered the prevailing view about where genetic #material was within the cell. In particular, she recognized that a second set of genes were found outside of the cell's nucleus. Even though they were non #chromosomal, these genes also influenced inherited characteristics. Previously, only the chromosomal genes had been considered to control genetic behavior. Her research in later life turned to the study of #genetic mechanisms involved in cancer. She was among the first to study the role of mutations in suppressor genes that neutralized their restraint on cell #reproduction.

“U.S. #paleontologist and #geologist known for his work on paleoecology as shown by #Foraminifera (marine protozoans).
He was director of Boston Natural History Museum between 1913-23 and director of Cushman Laboratory for Foraminifera Research in #Sharon, Massachusetts in 1923. He was the most well-known foraminiferologist of his time”.

#Scientist of the Day….. “ Max Theiler”…
==============================
Max Theiler (Born on Today’s date in 1899):

“#American #microbiologist who won the 1951 Nobel Prize for #Physiology or Medicine for his research on yellow fever.
Theiler's discovery that mice are susceptible to yellow fever facilitated research and eventual development of a vaccine against the disease in humans.
Upon graduation from medical training in tropical medicine in London, he joined the department of tropical medicine at the #HarvardMedicalSchool, U.S. and studied infectious diseases. His research on yellow fever led to development of the first attenuated strain of the #virus. He moved to the Rockefeller Institute for Medical, N.Y. (1930-64), where with his associates he developed the improved (17-D) #vaccine, widely used for human immunization against yellow fever".

Scientist of the Day….. “ Arvid Carlsson ”…
==============================

"Arvid Carlsson (Born on Today’s date in 1923)":

“#Swedish neuroscientist who shared (with Paul Greengard and Eric R. Kandel) the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology “for their discoveries concerning signal transduction in the nervous system.” He made fundamental contributions to understanding of the brain through his research on #synaptic transmission.

The method of communication between neurons, he discovered the roles of seratonin and dopamine as chemical #neurotransmitters, thus adding a whole new mode of action to the existing knowledge of electrical #neurotransmission (via action potentials).

His work led to the development of #levodopa, the first drug to treat Parkinson's disease symptons. Carlsson also introduced the first selective re-uptake inhimitor, zimelidine, which led to development of #Prozac and #Zoloft for the treatment of depression”.

“It is my sincere hope that #Christopher Bryson's apparently thorough and comprehensive perusal of the #scientific literature on the #biological actions of fluoride and the ensuing debates through the years will receive the attention it deserves and that its implications will be seriously considered”..
