It is owned by Novi Digital Entertainment, a subsidiary of Star India, which itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company India. It provides streaming media and video-on-demand services and is available on web, Android, iOS, FireTV, and Apple TV platforms.

The app garnered 340 million views for all 49 matches during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and over 200 million views during the Indian Premier League Season 8 (2015). Hotstar has more than 100 advertisers on the platform. The content is provided either free of cost or on a subscription basis (for premium content). Bulk of their revenue generation is through advertisements.

In addition to the website, Hotstar is available as an application across mobile devices which are on Android, iOS, and Apple TV platforms. Hotstar Android application is currently available in India, USA, and Canada. In 2018, Hotstar started their service in UK and they streamed IPL 2019.

In January 2019, Hotstar announced that to compete with Netflix, Amazon Video and other local competitors they are going to launch Hotstar Specials. This brand is going to be associated with the original content produced exclusively for the service. Their first launch will be docu-drama on the fairy tale moment of Chennai Super Kings as it made a comeback return to 2018 edition of the IPL after serving a two-year ban for allegedly involving in 2013 spot-fixing scandal which remarkably went onto become title winners at the 2018 Indian Premier League defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to lift their third IPL title.
