Bringing live music back into the public arena!
Celebrating another first, Influence Music Hall (IMH) hosted an open-air, open mic evening on Friday, June 19th 2020. The long-time staple in the Hillsboro music community recently made the difficult decision not to renew the lease at the 3rd Street location, due to concerns about COVID-19 and the suitability of the venue. While founder Evan Acey and the board search for a new permanent location, they also continue to uphold the mission of IMH: keeping live music free and open to everyone, with or without a building. Anyone who has ever stepped onto the Influence stage, regardless of the location, knows that it’s not about the venue, but the performer, and giving those performers space and encouragement to showcase their talent.
The parking lot made an ideal theatre for a socially distanced audience, most in lawn chairs, six feet apart. Under a warm, overcast sky, this first for IMH was held at the Weil Arcade, with audience and performers in facemasks, when not singing. Acey live-streamed the event on Facebook, as board members John Clements ran the sound and Greg Ebert monitored parking. Fan-favorite, musician, Andee Joyce was the emcee and opening act. As any night at IMH, the open-air version treated listeners to an eclectic mix of original and cover tunes, spoken word and beatbox. In this new era, the nine artists used their own microphones, placed into mic stands that were sanitized after every performance.
While the search for a permanent location continues, plans are in the works to offer these open-air, open mic events, with IMH following guidelines to ensure the health and safety of the audience and performers. To learn more about IMH, or where a performance may pop up next, check out the non-profit’s website at influencemusichall.org or their page.

In Memory of John Tyner III
A great man who walked among us has taken his big step into eternity. John Tyner III leaves a legacy that is larger than life. All those who knew him were blessed by his kindness, his wisdom, and his gift of song.
Ladies and Gentleman, John Tyner III has left the building.
Hi we could really use some help down here at the music hall this weekend especially today. In fact right now. If you have a little room in your garbage cans or a way to help us get rid of a few things we ran out of space in our garbage. Also just help moving some things and cleaning up really appreciate it thanks
We received some generous help from the HACC - we thank them so much.

The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council awarded $52,750 in funding to support Hillsboro-based organizations.
We are deeply grateful!
The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council notified us that we have received an Emergency Operating Support Grant. We are grateful for the support of the HACC. We intend to use this award to raise Influence Music Hall to new levels of service to our community.
Recently we decided to relinquish our physical space, where Influence Music Hall has presented fine art and staged great music for many years. Given the impact and consequences of the on-going pandemic on public health and economies this still makes sense.
But it does not mean the Influence Music Hall community is going away. We will not disappear! We remain confident that the mission will not only persist, but get stronger in the face of adversity.
We are already busy planning a series of events that, when safe for everyone, will bring open mic back to the people, in support of our community.
This award from the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council will be put to good use as Influence Music Hall transitions to become an even greater presence in this region. Thank you HACC!!!
A Community for Art & Music
Hello patrons - following the announcement of our closing we have a bit of work to do to get moved out on time and to clean the property. We're looking for any volunteers who can come down for a few hours on a weekend day for the next few weekends to move stuff to a storage space and/or help clean up. Please IM us if you are available.
Sorry this has been belated to post here to FB, it has been up on our website.
From the Tualatin Valley Artists Association, Volunteers and Managers of the Influence Music Hall and Art Gallery :
Dear Fellow Hillsboro Community Members, Musicians and Artists, Patrons, and Humans of the World –
At the end of May our annual lease is up at 135 SE 3rd Avenue. We’ve had almost too many good times there to count. Thousands of artists and musicians have come through there since 2006. No matter your level of expertise, pro or amateur, on Open Mic night, you got 15 minutes, and love and respect. And a killer sound system with knowledgeable engineers. You got musicians to help you out, cheer you on. We did our best to help anyone sound their best, and we believe we succeeded.
You know what’s going on in the world, and we had a heart-wrenching decision to make about continuing a considerable expense--using the funding we get from your donations--on a space in which doubted we could utilize fully--and most importantly, be able to ensure your safety. It was a space originally intended for storage and we did the best we could to make it a home for art and music, and for you. But it lacks ventilation and other amenities that more fully supports the public expectations of sanitation and comfort in these changing times.
Therefore, after much discussion up to the deadline, we took the difficult decision to not renew the lease.
This means we are closing the physical location of the Influence Music Hall for now.
HOWEVER! We are still a non-profit organization with a mission, and we will continue our efforts in that mission, to serve you, the community, to develop a space wherever that might be, to allow you to shine in your art, whatever style and medium that is! We are still a community!
For the near term, until social distancing restrictions develop in stages in allowing us to gather, we will host weekly online open mics, and then plan to hold “pop-up” or impromptu open-mics in whatever locations we can manage in the open-air or fair-weather circumstances around Hillsboro. We are dedicated to staying near downtown Hillsboro to give access to those who use mass transit or walk/ride within our community here.
When we all understand more about the pandemic and what we can expect as far as having a physical indoor space to be able to remain occupied, and when funding and the rental market provides the opportunity, we will do our best to open the Influence Music Hall again. We look forward to an awesome sound system and gallery, and good times with you!
In the meantime, we welcome any input, advice, ideas, and any financial support you can provide to help us in this mission. We will continue to incur some costs for storage, and whatever funding we can save up for will go to opening up a new hall! Please contact us through our website, and be sure to sign up for our newsletter, of which we plan to make regular, to keep you in the loop!
Thank you everyone - for all your support, kindness, love, and art –
