Wouldn't it have been amazing if the human creature that put our tiny 9 week old baby boy Georgie in a box and dumped him on a cold December sidewalk had sought out help from a veterinarian, a rescuer, or even a Facebook pet rehoming group?
Sad truth is that many people don't know these resources exist and sometimes, not always, they aren't as cruel as they seem. Ok that's being very generous.
Over the years, with the creation of social media pages specifically focused on rescue, there is increasing awareness of helpful resources available to people who have disabled puppies they can't place.
In the past, breeders would automatically "cull" dogs they deemed unfit for the world, largely based on some ill conceived notion that you have to be able to see, hear, and move without aid in order to live a fulfilled good quality of life. Many were protecting their reputations in covering evidence of their breeding lines gone south.
Regardless, veterinarians used to be compliant in euthanizing puppies like deaf blind Georgie and Piglet bc they didn't have experience or knowledge to offer help in placing disabled puppies. They hadn't seen first hand how a deaf blind or other profoundly disabled dog could live happily.
Thankfully with an increase in advocacy for disabled pets, vets are changing their mindset and approach towards their role in doing what's best for disabled puppies, dogs, and other pets in their exam rooms.
With a host of resources, vets are able to help clients who bring them disabled animals no matter why and where they've come from.
