Listen up Hoosiers! We have a great chance for Northern Lights viewing over the next several nights! Here's a quick breakdown:

TONIGHT: Viewing possible for areas north of Indianapolis. Areas south of Indianapolis will have a harder time viewing based on current expected storm strength.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Statewide viewing POSSIBLE! A big solar storm was launched towards earth this morning with an expected arrival time around 8am tomorrow morning. The SWPC has issued a G4 or greater solar storm watch. This means the solar storm has potential to be strong enough to make the Northern Lights visible down into lower latitudes.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Similar to tonight, we expect viewing chances to remain across the northern half of Indiana as residual effects from all the incoming solar storms continue.

CLOUD FORECAST:

TONIGHT: Clear statewide.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Some high clouds possible.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy.

Remember! Aurora does not follow an exact timeframe. We have a general idea of when to expect this solar storm to arrive, but we can't predict when exactly to go see it until it's happening in real time. Be wary of forecasts that tell you exactly what times to go look. NO ONE KNOWS!

Stay tuned for updates! An exciting 72 hours is ahead of us!

UPDATE: Significant lake effect snow is expected over the next 36 hours. Accumulations topping 10” will be possible across the far northwest corner of the state, with isolated areas reaching 18”.

⚠️Gusty winds will cause blowing snow & whiteout conditions. Life threatening travel is expected on major interstates in close proximity to Lake Michigan.

➡️Give yourself plenty of extra time if you’re traveling through the impacted areas today & tomorrow morning.

ℹ️Heaviest snow accumulations are expected later tonight into Monday morning, but snow will likely be ongoing throughout today. This system will wrap up by late Monday night/ early Tuesday morning.

This is a potent early season lake effect snow setup that should be taken seriously by residents and motorists. We will be tracking all the latest here at IWN, with a live stream planned with our chasers later this evening / tomorrow morning.

⚠️Travel impacts are expected to be high for the upcoming lake effect snow event!

➡️WHEN: Beginning Sunday afternoon/evening and continuing into Monday morning.

➡️WHERE: Highest travel impacts are in northwest Indiana around the Michigan City area.

🟩No to low impacts expected. Roads may become slippery for brief periods of time within snow bands that drift through this zone. Minimal snow accumulations expected. Drive with care.

🟨Medium impacts expected. Roads will likely be snow covered and snow will be more frequent. Drive with caution. Leave earlier if you have prior plans. A couple inches of snow accumulation is expected.

🟥High impacts expected. 6+ inches of snow expected with persistent, heavy, lake effect snow bands. Reduced visibility is likely, roads will be slippery throughout much of this event. Allow plenty of extra time if you are traveling.

🟪Travel not advised. Localized snow totals may exceed 12” in spots. Visibilities will be near zero at times thanks to gusty winds. Consider finding an alternative route.
