🔍DEAR CITIZENS OF HOGANSVILLE 🔎
❗️OP EDITORIAL ON UTILITIES❗️
💥IMPORTANT INFORMATION💥
⚡️The first item for clarification would be the misinformation and the misunderstanding of utility costs for consumers here in Hogansville.
⚡️Some things all citizens need to know and understand:
⚡️The #1 myth that has been propagated for years here, (even now), is that Hogansville has the highest utility costs in the State of Georgia. This is blatantly false and can be easily debunked by facts, of which you can see if you stick with us through our examination and presentation of the information and analysis to follow.
1) There is a difference between a “utility” bill and a “light” bill. A “utility” bill (which is what all residents here receive), is a bill that includes other charges for services of various types provided by the city, and those are “electricity”, water, sewerage, garbage pickup and natural gas if you use it.
2) A “light” bill is customarily what one would receive that gets their “electricity” from an energy supplier and does not include other services. Customarily for citizens outside of a municipality boundary and in rural areas. This bill would include ONLY what the provider charges for ELECTRICITY.
⚡️So naturally, a “utility” bill is going to have more charges for services and cost more than a “light” (electric only) bill.
⚡️A lot of arguments from some are comparing their “utility” bill, to a “light” bill, (electric only), that they received from somewhere else. What is the saying?, that’s like comparing apples and oranges. Not the same.
⚡️What we need to be comparing is the cost per kilowatt hour for electricity, which is the measuring method for calculating usage and charges for electricity used. I am going to now provide you below, with a couple of current screenshots from the PSC (public service commission) website that posts and maintains the current cost of electricity that municipalities charge their customers per kilowatt hour, which then determines your charges based on your USAGE. This list by itself debunks the claim of Hogansville having the highest cost for electricity in Georgia.
⚡️So with those facts, it is not very hard to determine that the single most mitigating factor for most consumers is a USAGE PROBLEM when it comes to charges for electricity. Having been in a position at one time here to investigate this issue, one thing that is not talked about is that most consumers are going to naturally want to be comfortable in their home and not be too cold or too hot and thus not focus on the savings of setting the thermostat in a true energy saving mode.
⚡️Other mitigating factors like poor insulation and old windows and doors often lead to higher usage as well.
⚡️Often those that have $900-$1000 “light” bills don’t bother to reveal that a lot of the time that’s for more than just one month and includes arrears. (Not to say some folks with these BIG older houses could very well be paying that much but it’s still based on USAGE). If your bill is $1000 dollars for 1 MONTH, and you live in an average 1200 square foot house, SOMETHING IS WRONG. The meters, your insulation, your windows and doors, your thermostat settings, or something. I’m a citizen here and that’s why I try to keep up with things going on here and report them to you, good or bad but unless it’s a problem with a meter(which can and does happen), the city can’t be responsible for YOUR USAGE AMOUNTS. That’s OUR responsibility. I put new windows throughout my whole house last year and I can honestly say that it’s saving me on average, $30 a month on my electric and gas bill.
⚡️Please do not surmise that I don’t have empathy for consumers that struggle with affording utilities, I feel the pain of increased costs when it’s real cold or real hot as well, just like we all do. This is an OPINION edition based on my research and experience as a citizen here.
3) To those that are convinced that there is a conspiracy going on that contributes to utilities, just STOP. No one that represents the city is pocketing money off of utility revenue. NO WAY for that to happen with the books they are required to keep and the State Mandated Audits every year. As long as this supposed conspiracy has been going on, someone would have been caught by now. So just STOP it already.
4) A full list of electric rates can be found at psc.ga.gov. If you go on the city’s website and click on utilities, you can scroll down and get a summary of all the charges for each utility that we enjoy by living in Hogansville.
5) Lots of residents actually enjoy city services, partly because we don’t have a well and pump with pipes to maintain and PAY to fix when something goes wrong. No septic tank to maintain and PAY to have pumped out. No Tank for propane to have to PAY to fill and maintain. No trips to the dump(which costs money now) to dispose of our trash. Our electric grid is a little problematic, but they are working on upgrades.
6) Lastly, thank you if you’re still with me here. Through my research and knowledge of this subject I contend that what most residents are experiencing that causes a problem, is a USAGE PROBLEM. We are responsible for our USAGE. Do all you can to bring your usage down and the charges will come down as well.
Good Day
