Mamta Mishra is the picture of determination. When she found out her younger son had autism 29 years ago, she wanted to learn more about it. With the support of her husband, she started taking classes at Jacksonville State University, balancing her schoolwork with taking care of her two young sons. She also started homeschooling Parag since he could not be in a typical classroom environment.
“It was very, very hard,” she said.
She taught him basic skills and activities to improve hand-eye coordination. Later, when a local assessor said that Parag was not trainable for any jobs, Mishra started training him herself to make gel candles, pottery, body lotion and more. The products were sold in a local boutique, and Mishra was proud to be known as “the candlemaker’s mom.”
After encouragement from professors and friends, Mishra wrote a book to document their journey and inspire others. That book inspired a Facebook community Autism:Our Journey And Finding Happiness with 140,000 followers looking for advice and support. Mishra founded the Autism Foundation of Gadsden to provide local families with resources. The organization hosts a conference every year that continues to grow. In the meantime, Parag has found a new passion—painting. The Mishras’ home serves as his gallery, showcasing his talent and his family’s support.
