Itโs the usual, convenient lie of the elites. When a society is led by septuagenarians and octogenarians playing Risk with other peopleโs lives, bombs, and alliances, the public enemy number one suddenly becomes the kid in a hoodie smashing a shop window or the baby gang committing robberies on public transport. The data have been clear for decades: impulsive street violence peaks between the ages of 15 and 30. Itโs real, visible, and worrying. But it is the symptom, not the disease.The real structural violence โ the kind that kills the most, costs the most, and destroys the future โ is adult, mature, and institutional. It is the โold warmongersโ who decide on military interventions, increase military spending while cutting education and welfare, and pile up public debt that the young will repay at age 50 with interest. It is the adults who dominate domestic violence, femicides, family abuse, and abuses of power. It is the very same generations in command who have sold out merit, serious education, and dignified work, creating entire segments of young people with no prospects โ and then acting shocked when those young people become violent or apathetic.The trick is brilliant: pointing the finger at the young allows them to avoid looking in the mirror. There is no need to question how a failing ruling class โ often hypocritical, often corrupt, often bellicose โ has raised precisely the generation it now denounces. There is no need to admit that many adults set the worst possible example: psychological violence in the workplace, unscrupulous careerism, amoral familism, greed and cynicism disguised as wisdom.Violent young people do not spring from nowhere. They are the rotten fruit of a society governed by adults who preach responsibility while practicing impunity. Adults who send young people off to die or to rot in degraded suburbs and then express outrage when those same young people respond with primitive rage.The problem is not age. It is power without accountability. As long as white-haired warmongers continue to rule without paying the price for their choices, they will keep pointing the finger at the young. Not to solve a problem, but to distract from themselves.Itโs time to flip the narrative: demand that those who hold power set the good example first. Or admit, once and for all, that the real emergency is an old, failed, and dangerous ruling class.
