‘From The Abyss To The Moon’ by $AVEDBYPARI$ released four years ago today. Described as his “metamorphosis” - FTATTM marks the 2nd mixtape of his career and the first installment of The Moon Trilogy.
In 2021, at the time of the mixtape’s release, Paris wrote, “I spent so long finding myself, figuring out who I was as both an artist and person, doubting myself, discovering my sound, redefining it, doubting myself again, and deciding what I wanted my message to be.”
While sitting down with Underground Sounds Podcast, Paris states that “you associate the Abyss with darkness, your low point” describing it as a “physical and mental place.” The reason for his musical hiatus had to do with “feeling stuck” working a job that he hated and going to college – things that he didn’t want to do.
Paris channels that depression on tracks like “depression is temporary” with the opening lines “sometimes yourself is your biggest enemy, you just gotta prevail.” Themes heavily associated with the mixtape are clear as day – depression, guilt, self-doubt, & death.
Towards the end of the project, Paris questions death on his most vulnerable track “Don’t Gun Me Down,” with lines like “Heaven or Hell, where do we go when we die,” and “I’ve come too far, don’t gun me down.” It isn’t until the end of the track that we realize it is a tribute to his friend and fellow artist, Eastside Savage, who was gunned down in 2019.
