Buquet Bridge, Dulac, Louisiana
If you've traveled down Grand Caillou Road through Dulac, chances are you've crossed the Buquet Bridge — but there's more history behind this bridge than most people realize.
Built in 1976, the Buquet Bridge is a vertical-lift drawbridge crossing Bayou Grand Caillou along Falgout Canal Road. The bridge stretches roughly 416 feet, with a 76-foot lift span that rises to let boats pass underneath.
For nearly 50 years, this bridge has been part of everyday life in Dulac and an important connection for the people and working waterfront of Shrimpers Row.
But the bridge has had its share of battles.
After Hurricane Ida (2021), the bridge suffered significant damage, including damage associated with a vessel collision. What followed was years of planning, funding, repairs and rehabilitation. The work included a new lift span and steel grid flooring, repairs to the machinery, counterweights, electrical systems, navigation lights, traffic gates and structural components.
And now, after years of being out of service...
Buquet Bridge is back open.
As of September 11, 2026, the bridge has officially reopened to both vehicle and marine traffic.
It's more than just a bridge.
It's one of those pieces of infrastructure that becomes part of a community's identity — connecting people, boats, businesses and generations of South Louisiana life.

DID YOU KNOW? 🌿🐊
Just outside of Houma sits a place a lot of people drive right past without ever realizing what's back there — Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge.
I decided to take a walk down the Mandalay Nature Trail and see what I could find. What starts as a short walk through the woods eventually leads you out onto a boardwalk surrounded by the wetlands that make South Louisiana so unique.
This place isn't just about a trail. It's a little glimpse into the wild side of our backyard — cypress, marsh, wildlife, and the kind of scenery that reminds you why we call this place home.
Sometimes you don't have to travel far to find something worth exploring.
South Louisiana is full of hidden places. You just have to slow down long enough to find them.

🇺🇸 IN HONOR OF 9/11, I CHOSE THIS TODAY.
Today is September 11th — a day that reminds us of the sacrifices made by so many who served, and of the men and women who continue to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the freedoms we have.
So today, I chose to highlight a piece of that history right here in our own backyard.
🇺🇸 DID YOU KNOW?
There’s a piece of World War II history sitting right here in Houma, Louisiana — and most people probably drive past it without realizing just how much history is inside.
The Regional Military Museum preserves the stories of South Louisiana men and women who served, along with artifacts spanning from the Civil War all the way to modern conflicts.
One story that really caught my attention is Houma’s role in World War II.
In 1943, Houma became home to a major U.S. Navy blimp base. These massive airships patrolled the Gulf of Mexico searching for German U-boats threatening ships carrying fuel and supplies along our coast.
And the history didn't stop there. German prisoners of war were also brought to South Louisiana and put to work in our sugarcane and rice fields.
Today, the giant hangar is gone, but the history remains.
Inside the Regional Military Museum are pieces of that history — including a combat-used Vietnam Huey, an F-4 Phantom, military artifacts, and the stories of local men and women who answered the call to serve.
This isn't just a military museum. It's a reminder.
A reminder that freedom has never been free.
And on September 11th, I think it's important that we remember those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who never came home.

Tucked away in the marshes of Terrebonne Parish, in-between Dulac and Chauvin, is Lake Boudreaux — a place that looks peaceful from above, but has a story written into the landscape.
📜 Did you know Lake Boudreaux is part of a constantly changing piece of Louisiana’s coast?
The lake and surrounding marshes were shaped by the Mississippi River delta, natural land-building, erosion, subsidence and changes in the Gulf. What you see today isn't exactly what was here generations ago.
For generations, these waters and surrounding marshes have supported the people who made their living from South Louisiana's coast — shrimpers, fishermen, crabbers and hunters.
But Lake Boudreaux also represents the struggle Louisiana faces today. Thousands of acres of coastal marsh have disappeared throughout this region because of erosion, subsidence and saltwater intrusion.
Today, restoration projects are working to protect and rebuild portions of this fragile coastline.
From the ground, it can look like nothing more than water and marsh.
From the air, you start to see the bigger picture.
This isn't just a lake. It's a piece of Louisiana history that's still changing right in front of us. 🌊

WHIP’S SLIP MARINA — Houma, LOUISIANA ⚓️
Tucked along the water at 1109 Dunn Street in Houma, Whip’s Slip Marina is one of those little waterfront spots that feels right at home in South Louisiana.
The location was formerly known as On The Canal Bar, before becoming Whip’s Slip Marina. Today, it’s a laid-back gathering place where the water, passing boats, cold drinks and live music are all part of the experience.
There may not be a huge story written in history books about this place, but that's part of what makes spots like Whip’s Slip special. They become part of the local landscape — places where people meet up, swap stories and watch life move along the canal.
Just another little piece of Houma’s waterfront culture.

Did you know Louisiana only has TWO highway tunnels still in operation? 👀
And one of them is right here in Houma, Louisiana.
The Houma Tunnel opened in 1961 and carries LA 3040 underneath the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. It’s roughly 960 feet long, with one lane in each direction and even a pedestrian walkway.
And here's the part I think is pretty cool…
This tunnel wasn't bored underground like you might imagine. It was built inside temporary cofferdams in the canal, using reinforced concrete, and then the waterway was restored around it.
Louisiana has had three major highway tunnels; Houma, Harvey and Belle Chasse. But the Belle Chasse Tunnel was permanently closed in 2023 after the new bridge project.
So today, Houma and Harvey are the two remaining active highway tunnels in Louisiana.
Something most of us drive through without ever stopping to think about.
Just another piece of South Louisiana history hiding in plain sight.

While driving through Raceland, Louisiana looking for places to film, I stumbled across A Chateau on the Bayou.
I’ll be honest… I had never even noticed a bed and breakfast around here before. 😂 It caught my eye, so I pulled over and decided to do a little fly-around because it looked like a pretty interesting little place.
I don’t have any history on it, I don’t know the rates, and I have no idea who the owners are. This isn’t an advertisement — I just thought it was a cool little find.
In a world full of Airbnbs, it’s kind of refreshing to see an actual bed and breakfast right here in South Louisiana.
So I’m curious…

Did you know the Houma Golf Club, known by many locals as Colonial Acres, officially opened its fairways in 1982?
Designed by golf architect John Cooper, this public 9-hole course has been part of Houma for more than four decades, giving generations of locals a place to play, compete, and make memories.
But here's the cool part…
There was an earlier Houma Golf Club dating all the way back to 1928, which eventually became what many knew as Southern Oaks.
Two chapters of Houma golf history, separated by decades, but both leaving their mark on our community.
So the next time you pass these fairways, remember… you're looking at more than just a golf course. You're looking at a piece of Houma history. 🏌️‍♂️

I want to take a minute and talk about something that honestly weighs heavy on my heart.
Missing kids.
Somewhere right now, there’s a family waking up every morning without their child. There’s a mother wondering if her baby is safe. A father praying for a phone call. A brother or sister wondering when they’re coming home.
And the hardest part is that sometimes the rest of the world moves on.
I recently learned more about ShieldAVoice, and what they’re doing really hit me. They’re out there traveling from community to community, putting missing children’s faces and names in front of people, sharing cases, handing out flyers, and trying to make sure these kids dont become forgotten.
Think about that for a second.
A child shouldn't have to disappear from the world just because time has passed.
I know we all scroll past hundreds of posts every day. But what if one of those posts is the one that matters?
What if you share a missing child's picture and the person who sees it knows something?
What if that one share is what helps bring someone's child home?
I don't know about y'all, but I don't want to be the person who says, “I saw that post,” when I could have been the person who shared it.
So I'm asking y'all to do something simple.
Look. Share. Pay attention.
You never know whose life you might help change.
These aren't just pictures on a screen.
They're someone's child.
And they deserve to be remembered.
They deserve to be looked for.
They deserve to come home.
They need a voice.
Let's be that voice.
