R. Kelly Said The Best of Both Worlds Was Originally for Tupac — Not Jay-Z

R. Kelly’s 2012 book, Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, details a 1996 meeting at the Hotel Nikko in Los Angeles where he ran into Tupac Shakur. After stopping to talk, Kelly proposed a joint project combining hip-hop and R&B. The original plan was titled The Best of Both Worlds—a name Kelly later used for his 2002 collaborative album with Jay-Z after Tupac's death.

The musical framework for the project started with the 2000 R&B track “I Wish.” Kelly stated that the song's rhythm, vocal flow, and lyrics were written specifically to match Tupac's delivery style. The opening lines were meant for Tupac to perform as a story about neighborhood struggles. Following Tupac's death in September 1996, the project stopped, and Kelly eventually released the track as a solo song dedicated to his late mother.
