On September 13, 1991, Los Angeles marked an unusual occasion: the city proclaimed it Freddy Krueger Day to coincide with the premiere of Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Actor Robert Englund, in full recognition of his iconic role, accepted the proclamation at Mann’s Chinese Theater. Mayor Tom Bradley’s name was on the document, but he didn’t attend the horror celebration himself—he was across town opening a sewage treatment facility instead.

Around the same promotional cycle, Freddy was also “buried.” A tongue-in-cheek funeral was staged at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with members of the cast and crew in attendance. While some reports place the event in September, trade sources and industry coverage suggest it actually happened in October 1991. The precise date has proven elusive, but the spectacle served as a macabre marketing stunt to keep the character in the public eye.
