Chances are rising that a tropical depression or storm could form in the western Gulf. Here is the latest from Chief Meteorologist ABC13-Travis Herzog.

1PM THURSDAY TROPICAL UPDATE:
Storms are flaring up over the tropical low in the Gulf and the National Hurricane Center has increased development odds to 40%. If you missed my post from last night, I explained how the Bay of Campeche is notorious for quickly spinning up tropical depressions and storms beyond expectations. My base case remains a tropical depression or minimal Tropical Storm Fernand makes landfall near the Texas-Mexico border on Friday.

However, this is an interesting test case for the newer AI models, in particular Google's DeepMind model. It explicitly predicts a tropical storm will make landfall near Baffin Bay just south of Corpus Christi. One of its ensemble members even goes so far as to generate a hurricane, but it is an outlier that I do not think is plausible at this time.

I see nothing right now to drastically alter our expected impacts here in Southeast Texas. There could be some wind gusts over 35 mph toward Matagorda Bay tomorrow (Friday) as the system is moving ashore, and I expect a wave of scattered thunderstorms to roll in from the south during the afternoon and evening. The greatest risk for storms that could generate street flooding would occur late tomorrow (Friday) night and Saturday morning, especially in our coastal counties. If I've got outdoor plans, I'm not canceling them, but I am keeping tabs on the radar and making sure I have a place to safely sit out a tropical downpour.

Let’s keep an eye on the western Gulf together this week. Here’s more from Chief Meteorologist ABC13-Travis Herzog in a special Tuesday evening tropical update.

NEW FROM NHC TUESDAY EVENING:
While a lot of the weather world is focused on Tropical Storm Erin, we need to pay attention to a tropical wave flaring up over the northwest Caribbean. We've been telling you on the news to watch this spot for a couple of days, and now the National Hurricane Center is giving it a 20% chance of spinning up into a tropical depression or storm before it makes landfall Friday and clips Texas.

This reminds me a lot of the setup that led to Tropical Storm Barry's quick and sudden development at the end of June. The Bay of Campeche is notorious for quickly spinning up small tropical systems, so it's worth watching. Regardless of development, we stand to see a chance of scattered downpours Friday and Saturday due to this tropical disturbance.

ABC13 Weather Watch for Friday:
Tropical downpours will visit Southeast Texas tomorrow, and this could lead to street flooding in some communities. The highest chance for rain in the morning will reside in our coastal counties, then the higher rain chances will shift into Houston and the surrounding suburbs in the afternoon. A quick 1-3" of rain is possible, with some isolated totals along the coast possibly exceeding 6" of rain.

Wednesday Evening 7/23 Tropical Update:
NHC is still just giving 10% odds anything develops out of the tropical moisture moving toward us in Texas. The most likely scenario remains that it tries to spin up an area of low pressure at the last minute before moving into Texas late Friday with the end result of widely scattered downpours late Friday and Saturday.

I just cut a new video addressing some of the common concerns I've seen regarding how much rain this can produce, how strong it can get, whether or not it will stall, and what to do if you have beach plans this weekend (hint: keep them for now).
