Givenchy Resort 2024 Menswear

https://houstondailyjournal.com/givenchy-resort-2024-menswear/

When it comes to menswear, Matthew M. Williams deploys his specifically evolved aesthetic to conjure fresh answers to a fundamental fashion question: What is unavailable to purchase that men want to wear today? Or as he puts it: “For me, menswear is so much about wardrobing—about finding that perfect thing that you can’t always buy.”

What renders something perfect yet elusive is determined by the way in which its owner wishes to wear it. As Williams points out, archetypical garments are often cut to be worn in a certain manner that is not necessarily current. Many button-up shirts, for instance, are cut to fit close to the body and neck in order to be worn under a jacket in the confines of a tie. “But if you want to find a shirt with a sleeve drop and neck opening that allows it to be won in a casual way—and I like to wear mine over a t-shirt—then that’s more challenging.” Thus this bridge collection contained just such a button-up.

Menswear reshapes itself under pressure from two competing forces: tradition and revolt. Williams’s most-used recipe for adapting his designs to those meandering forces is to re-order the layers and proportions of his looks, while mixing traditionally cloistered menswear genres into each other. He then often adds hardware to taste. Examples here included placing a carefully oversized tailored jacket over a ’90s-wide skate pant bedecked with punkish, cinching metal fixtures, or fixing a ’50s-origin biker with a ’90s-origin technical zippering array and then placing it over a breaky straight-legged workwear-silhouette pant. These looks and more came strapped with crossbody versions of the house Voyou bag.

Said Williams: “I like to develop things that might seem simple. But in actuality I don’t know where you can buy these pieces. That’s why in this collection I was working to create a balance between a strong fashion proposal that’s directional and a series of timeless and elevated wardrobing pieces that I want to wear, and which I would have trouble finding anywhere.” Anywhere, that is, apart from Givenchy.

Zero + Maria Cornejo Resort 2024

https://houstondailyjournal.com/zero-maria-cornejo-resort-2024/

Maria Cornejo has spent spring on the road, visiting stores around the US—Austin, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit. In Denver, where she put on a fashion show at the Contemporary Museum of Art with her retail partner, Max, a ZMC superfan introduced herself. “She said, ‘I’ve had so much fun in this dress,’” Cornejo remembered during a recent studio visit. “That’s why we’re still here, we’re always listening to our customers.”

Cornejo’s business turns 25 this year, a milestone that shouldn’t go unremarked. Over that quarter century, the fashion industry has become more and more consolidated, with resources concentrated among a small number of super brands, which in turn command the lion’s share of retail and e-tail real estate, and thus the fashion media’s attention. To stand out as an independent business in that landscape, a designer needs to have a unique selling point—a voice.

That’s one thing that Cornejo has never lacked, as a tour through the racks in her showroom reminds us. She resurrected a circular grid print she created at another museum, San Francisco’s de Young, a decade ago for this resort collection, but it’d be wrong to call it a greatest hits lineup. Cornejo’s vocabulary is well established. She worked here with the easy-wearing, elegant circular and triangle shapes she’s long favored, as she does most seasons.

The novelty comes from the fabrics, which only become more interesting as time goes by. There’s the circular grid print, in different colorways for the diverse regions where her collection is sold. Us New Yorkers get the black version with fiery orange and yellow dots, while the white will play better in the south and west, she said. There’s a soft cotton matelassé whose vibe is different depending on its color; white says beach wedding guest and the two-tone brown-and-black option looks ready for holiday parties. And there’s stretch luxe velvet in jewel tone shades of citrine and amethyst for a caftan and a figure flattering column with a lightly elasticated waist.

As far as fun is concerned, this season’s top contender is something new from ZMC: a short dress with a deep-v neckline and no sleeves. “They want to show off their legs and look sexy,” Cornejo explained. Always listening.

Givenchy Resort 2024

https://houstondailyjournal.com/givenchy-resort-2024/

Although it was relatively unsung, Hubert de Givenchy’s house did produce menswear under its founder. As with Givenchy’s current creative director, that menswear was strongly informed by the personal identity of Hubert himself.

When it comes to womenswear, Givenchy’s heritage is up there in the pantheon. And wisely, Matthew M. Williams has of late become much more engaged with the specific archival codes of his original predecessor. This resort duly included a series of prettily and precisely draped evening dresses in confectionary colors. Added to these riffs on Hubert’s classical and sometimes almost minimal mid-20th century womenswear silhouettes, realized in new-century materials, were contemporary accessories including Voyou bags and footwear including Cowboy Shark boots. The combination created a sort of fashion time-travel impression: Audrey Hepburn in a Tik Tok by Hitchcock.

In other scenes, Williams developed his own elevated Cali work/skate/grunge womenswear aesthetic, placing riveted construction denim under archival snow leopard relief outerwear and shaggy Afghan-esque jackets over stirruped post-Skims fitted pants. Unstructured yet cinched tailoring in silk twill, plus harder, collarless satin-darted jackets added a recognizably menswear/formal element that was referential without being reverential.

Underlying the lookbook pieces was a large swathe of carefully developed offerings in jersey and cashmere, there to feed Williams’s urge to offer Givenchy customers an unusually thoughtful (at least in luxury) array of wardrobing options. Hubert’s are big shoes to fill—most especially when it comes to womenswear—but Williams continues to find his feet.

See Stella McCartney and Shie Lyu Ingeniously Reinterpret Each Other’s Work

https://houstondailyjournal.com/see-stella-mccartney-and-shie-lyu-ingeniously-reinterpret-each-others-work/

When Shanghai-and-Chengdu-based womenswear designer Shie Lyu received an email inviting her to take part in a Vogue-initiated collaborative project with Stella McCartney, her astonishment bordered on disbelief. “I thought the message was spam!” exclaims Lyu, who founded her label in 2020.

“Everything was closed, transportation was impossible, and I could only use what I had,” she says. “So I incorporated lots of acrylic, rubber, and Swarovski crystals left over from my degree studies.” Lyu’s conscious approach may have been one of necessity rather than ethos, but she’s continued to evolve in her eco-awareness. To bring a “hyper-feminine” and eveningwear-inclined element to McCartney’s formal tailoring fabrics, she used a signature zero-waste cutting technique to create the gossamer train of a skirt, which is constructed from squares that are handworked with an origami effect over several days to resemble butterflies or grooved shells. “Every inch of the fabric is used,” Lyu says.

There’s a certain undoneness to both McCartney’s and Lyu’s creations, the former relishing in a design “rough around the edges,” with fraying fabrics and unfinished hems, while Lyu took inspiration from what McCartney called the “feminine slink” of her golden chain top, incorporating buckles and metal-hoop lacing and adding crisscrossing machine stitching and embroidery to trace the female form like a feisty take on a tailor’s chalk.

The fact that their work together was a female-led creative exchange only adds to the joy. “There are so few women heading up brands, let alone founders,” McCartney laments. “But the majority of our team are women.”

“It’s been unbelievable,” adds Lyu, who hopes to meet McCartney face to face—instead of communicating via threads and fabrics—when the latter visits China later this year. “I really want to try the trench coat on!”

“I promise to personally carry it in my hand luggage,” McCartney says, smiling.

Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Lily Rose Depp, Taylor Russell, and Tina Lawson

https://houstondailyjournal.com/best-fashion-instagrams-of-the-week-lily-rose-depp-taylor-russell-and-tina-lawson/

This week in fashion, standout IG posters illustrated the power of anything-goes fashion. A tuxedo paired with gold grills? In the world of designer Riccardo Tisci, this coupling masterfully marries rough-and-tumble with formality. Model Kyle Gayle, a.k.a. , made a long-sleeved latex top, a Goofy tee, a propeller hat, and a furry bag look like the perfect dinner outfit. While Laverne Cox, who recently celebrated her 51st birthday, wore a 2001 John Galliano-era Dior with 1985 Manfred Thierry Muglery, showing that a fabulous vintage get-up does not have to be constrained to a singular decade.

There were also unapologetically high-glam moments. Notably, Bones and All star Taylor Russell delivered bonafide razzle-dazzle in a Jonathan Anderson at Loewe design. The glittering look matched the rising star’s undisputable shine.

Tina Lawson, who seems to be accompanying daughter Beyoncé on her Renaissance World Tour, became an art masterpiece at the Louvre in high-waist cargo pants, a statement belt, and a chic black top. Mona Tina!

Irina Shayk Is Having a Slip Dress Summer

https://houstondailyjournal.com/irina-shayk-is-having-a-slip-dress-summer/

Irina Shayk’s slip dress summer continues.

On June 3, the 37-year-old model shared multiple photos in a vibrant purple and blue Versace slip dress with a lace-lined thigh slit and lime-green lace accents. The archival piece was pulled from Gianni Versace’s fall/winter 1996 collection and paired with blinged-out sandals and jewelry, as well as lacy bluish-green underwear, which Shayk flashed in the eighth Instagram photo. “Versace, Versace,” Shayk captioned the pics, which received kudos from Donatella Versace, herself.

“Soooooo gorgeous!!!” Versace replied to the post.

This is actually the second vintage Versace slip dress Shayk has whipped out in recent weeks. While finishing up her appearances at Cannes Film Festival in late May, Shayk borrowed a bias-cut slip dress from Versace’s 1995 collection, featuring a sheer skirt layered underneath asymmetrical seafoam blue silk. “Thank u house for opening the archive and [making] my dream come true,” she captioned the photos at the time, promising “more to come.”

Apple Savings Account customers allege transfer withdrawal latency

https://houstondailyjournal.com/apple-savings-account-customers-allege-transfer-withdrawal-latency/

The Apple Savings UI. (Source: Apple)

Apple Savings has reportedly attracted about US$100 million in deposits since launching in the US in April 2023. Now, however, some of its customers have gone public with claims that trying to get their money out of the accounts in question took weeks in some cases, while others claim that their balances never updated following such a transaction. Is the Cupertino giant’s consumer ‘financial wellness’ drive all that healthy?

Apple’s Wallet business received an overwhelming boost on the launch of its “high-yield APY” (4.15%) Savings product with “no fees, no minimum deposits, and no minimum balance” (no financial advice). However, according to some of its clients, the Cupertino giant should also have disclosed a similar lack of customer service, support and transaction speed.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has documented the experiences of Apple Savings user Nathan Thacker, who claims to have had a US$17,000 transfer from that account to another take over 14 days to complete. Similarly, another customer, Kevin Smyth, asserts that the service “is not ready for prime-time” as it will “hold your money hostage with security reviews“, such as the one that inhibited his own US$10,000 transfer.

On that note, the WSJ does point out that transactions involving such relatively large sums of money could indeed be subject to increased scrutiny for anti-money-laundering (AML) purposes, thereby possibly also affecting the likelihood of their delay.

Apple Savings’ fintech partner Goldman Sachs has also responded to deposit-holder complaints by insisting that those who experience such transfer latency are in the minority. Nevertheless, some customers have reportedly also criticized the service provider’s customer support, in terms of its quality and consistency.
