Birmingham entered the entertainment industry by chance when he was discovered at a gym and appeared in Diana Ross's *Muscles* music video in 1982. From there, he committed himself to acting, training under renowned coaches like Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. Through talent and perseverance, he gradually made a name for himself with roles in *Riptide*, *Body & Soul*, *Into the West*, and *Hell or High Water*.

Beyond his successful career, Birmingham actively contributes to raising awareness of Native American culture and history through his meaningful roles. He has become one of the prominent figures representing Native Americans in Hollywood, inspiring many young actors within the community.

The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago.
As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia. The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Miโ€™kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida. Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the โ€œGlory Days.โ€ It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe.
For instance, the โ€œGlory Daysโ€ of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century. At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages. The Americasโ€™ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

FEMALE HOMESTEADER Cap Barker posed with an S&W revolver and a heavy corduroy skirt during a cool spring day in Eastern Montana, 1912 or so. Bill Foght, holding a bolt-action Ma**er carbine, had worked for the XIT operations in Montana for several years.

Evelyn Cameron included each person in various photos over time. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin. As always, I hope PC users will click image to enlarge/clarify.

DRAGGINโ€™ A CALF to the branding fire, 1939. Grass was surprisingly plentiful near Birney, far south in SE Montana, when many areas were suffering under Dust Bowl conditions. The horse and Hereford calf kicked up dust at the Quarter Circle U Ranch, a cattle and horse outfit that added dude ranch operations during the the 1930s. Tourists traveled from all over to have a western experience of riding horses and doing some ranch chores.

New York photojournalist Arthur Rothstein took the photo. The shot, one of 500 at the ranch, shows that even a city slicker could occasionally frame a good view of ranch operations. Click or stretch to enlarge/clarify. Commentary and Photoshop sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin. A relatively slow shutter allowed some blur with the rider's motion.

THE SONG CATCHER, 1916. Musicologist Frances Densmore posed with (Frank) Mountain Chief, a Piegan Blackfeet Native of Montana. His bow and arrows were in view, tools Mountain Chief had decades earlier used to kill buffalo.

For 50 years, Frances Densmore recorded Native American music. The Edison recording machine/player, which used no electricity, recorded on wax cylinders. In 1925, sound greatly improved with recording systems that used electronic microphones. Click photo to better see details. Commentary and digital sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin

WHAT? This may be the ONLY barbed wire fence shown in an L.A. Huffman view. Moreover, this is one of the few with Huffmanโ€™s horse in the foreground. This vista was captured on the Spear Brothers Cattle Ranch, likely in the 1910s. The Spear operation leased one million acres on the Crow Reservation and ran 50,000 head of cattle. They had 22 "main" ranches in Montana and Wyoming, and 110 cow camps.

Huffman identified this area as Owl Creek Beef Trail, perhaps near Lodge Grass. A close examination shows at least 11 cowboys. I have the largest private collection of copy negatives made from Huffmanโ€™s originals. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

EMBARKING, 1910, by Edward S. Curtis. The Kutenai (Curtis's spelling) woman held an oar for the ELK HIDE CANOE at the edge of Flathead Lake in NW Montana. The view was nostalgic by 1910, but Curtisโ€™s goal was to capture the cultural history, the old ways, of Americaโ€™s First People. A soft focus was often used by Curtis for artistic reasons.

About seven thousand of the Upper Kutenai (Kootenai) group currently live on Flathead Reservation. PC users, click image to enlarge/clarify. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin. The print had a deliberately soft focus, but my interest in detail prompted me to sharpen as much as possible.

ODDITIES. This L.A. Huffman photo, likely from 1884, shows Miles Cityโ€™s Oyster Depot restaurant. A seafood outlet in eastern Monntan is surprising. Next we spot Isaac and Herman Orschelโ€™s clothing store and liquor distributor. Next in view is the Miles & Strevell store in its log building with a lumber front. Founding partner George Miles was the paymaster at Fort Keogh, where his uncle, Col. Nelson A. Miles, had been commander.

John Carter erected the first building in old Miles Town when Col. Miles kicked out the gamblers, prostitutes, and sellers of alcohol from the original Tongue River Cantonment (Post #1). When Miles moved his troops a couple miles west to the newly completed Fort Keogh in 1877, merchants relocated to be nearer to the fort. John Carterโ€™s second Old Keg Saloon is shown here.

Until the railroad reached Miles City in 1881, all goods arrived by bull trains and steamboats, which operated on the Yellowstone River during the June raise and some weeks before and after.

Perhaps oddest of all is seeing a telephone pole and its wires in this 1884 view. Alexander Graham Bell had first demonstrated his invention in 1876 on the day of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and the telephone was rapidly commercialized. The number of phones on Miles Cityโ€™s system reached 32 in 1885. The winter of 1886-87 killed 60+ percent of Montanaโ€™s cattle, and the resulting economic downturn caused the phone company to fail. BEAR BULL, Siksika (Northern Blackfoot of Canada) elder, 1926. Bear Bull had a tightly woven topknot of braided hair above the forehead, which indicated he was a keeper of a Thunder Medicine Pipe bundle. Clay dust gave a lighter color to his hair below the topknot. I regularly post my restorations of Old West photos, and the stunning side-profile portrait grabbed my notice. The Siksika Nation is in Alberta, Canada.

Photographer Edward S. Curtis published โ€œThe North American Indian,โ€ a 20-volume work that took 23 years to complete. It contained 1,500 photographs, a forward by President Teddy Roosevelt, and the first written history for several tribes. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify. WHATโ€™S GOINโ€™ ON? In 1910, the crew was drilling for water in rural Eastern Montana on a December day. Note the snow covered ground. Digging was a slow, noisy, percussive process. The cable tool rig had a boiler and appropriate gearing to lift a heavy steel shaft with a replaceable bit that would then plunge downward to crush rock and soil. After perhaps 10 - 15 feet of progress, water would be added to the pulverized material. With drilling stopped, the water and sediment were removed using a bailer bucket (see illustration in a later comment). Progress was slow. The woman and gent to the right were apparently the land owners.
Photo was by Evelyn Cameron. I did a bit of cleaning and sharpening in Photoshop. Click or zoom photo to enlarge/clarify. -Gary Coffrin

SIOUX BABY. Sure, your own baby picture was cute... but you did not get to wear a porcupine hair and feather roach and sit upon a racoon hide. Frank Bennett Fiske was best known for his portraits of Sioux taken at his Fort Yates (North Dakota) studio on the Standing Rock Reservation. In 1900 at age 17, Fiske had taken over the studio previously operated by S. T. Fansler.

The source file was a low-res scan of an undated real photo postcard at the North Dakota State Historical Society. The card was printed on DOPS brand paper, common on cards mailed during 1925โ€”42. However, the photo may have been taken decades earlier. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

CROW SCOUT, circa 1881โ€“85. With a rock-steady gaze, the handsome Crow scout was dressed in three layers. His identity was unlisted, but might have been Lone Wolf.

The portraits of Native Americans by Miles City (Montana) photographer L.A. Huffman rank among the Nationโ€™s best of the era. The young lensman was short and had a slight build. However, he reportedly had the gift of gab and somehow captured relaxed views of Native Americans at a White manโ€™s studio.

While post photographer at Fort Keogh, Huffman did not have the best gear. Still, you could see what looked like moisture droplets or painted dots above and below the lips. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. PC users are encouraged to click photo for a better view.

NORTHERN PACIFIC Railway, 1949. The recently introduced F7 locomotive weighed 240,000 pounds and was powered by a 16-cylinder 1500-horsepower diesel engine. Painted on the side was: "Main Street of the Northwest." Each trailing B unit added another 1500 hp.

The NP had been chartered in 1864 by Pres. Abraham Lincoln to connect the Pacific Northwest with the Great Lakes region. That northern connection across the Rocky Mountains was finally completed in 1883, when former Pres. Ulysses S. Grant attended ceremonies 50 miles west of Helena, Montana.

Photo was by A.E. Bennett at Trout Creek, a flag stop in NW Montana. Starting in 1953, a two-tone green color scheme would replace the one shown. See first comment on my page for an example. -Gary Coffrin

In about 1926, the Chandler Cleveland Six touring car had well-dressed occupants when Bonnie Jean Gray and King Tut leaped across. Miss Gray was a college-trained musician and regional champion tennis player. A member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, she achieved her greatest fame and income as a trick and movie stunt rider. When living in Burbank (California), she practiced some of her stunts in Will Rogersโ€™ front yard.

I normally post restored photos of the Old West from earlier decades, but my friend Leif recently purchased a convertible. So, this real photo postcard by renowned rodeo lensman Ralph R. Doubleday caught my attention. Click photo to enlarge if using a PC. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
