A Day with The Lovely and Talented Sharon Montgomery
We recently had an incredible experience at Tierra Studios. We were contacted by local composer John Yow and he wanted to record a couple of original pieces. I love these types of sessions. You never know what you are in for so the challenge and joy is in the adventure and unknown. I think it is important to be a studio where artists not only singers and musicians, but composers and arrangers feel safe enough to bring their creations. As John and I spoke he informed me that he already had musicians in mind for the session. That statement can be a bit disconcerting sometimes, however when John told me who was on the session, I almost started dancing in my office.
John has written several songs and i expect to have more of those recorded in the future.
The trio was made up of Tim Solook on drums, Brennan Nase on bass and jazz guitar, and Bob Henschen on piano. Not sure it could get any better than that until you mention Sharon Montgomery on vocals.
I met the amazing Sharon Montgomery on the band stand at an Ed Gerlach job in 1991. When she sang “Miss Otis Regrets” I swear she brought that story to life. We worked with Ed for about three years and then on and off around town until 2005 when I was asked by Lamar University to record the first installment of Jimmy Simmons and Friends with my mentor the late Wayne Dyess. We recorded that record live at an alumni concert. Sharon was stunning that night. Her rendition of I’ve Got it Bad (and That Ain’t Good)” was truly magical. If your heart is not crying with her by verse two, then it must be made of wood as the song says. We reconnected again in 2013 at a release party for Gary Weldon and his new album “Every Day Ain’t Fiday”.
Sharon sang two songs for John “ You’re the Christmas in My Heart” which is available on Itunes and a swing tune entitled “I’d Rather be with You Than Not” (available on Itunes in the near future). There is something special about these two songs, but let me say that Sharon brings them to life like no one else can.
What an amazing day of music. Please look for these songs on Itunes and sharonmontgomery.com and support local artists.

Repairing Relationships
From time to time, your studio gear sends you a message. The message that our Lexicon 960L sent to me was a message of frustration and a feeling of neglect. We all know that personal relationships take love and care to maintain them, a relationship with your favorite reverb is certainly no different.
Our sweet 960L sent me a series of messages and honestly I just missed them. The problems began with the LARC controls being un-responsive from time to time. However the LARC began to lose sync and eventually not start up with the machine at all. As our troubles increased, the unit began to fail to boot much like older hardware pieces will do over time.
Being the fun-loving optimist I am typically, I just let things go a bit too long until one Friday morning just prior to a mix session, it happened…
She left me high and dry. My sweet Lexicon (Lexi) would not even boot. Not a single light or whistle only the sounds of my lonely sad heart and her cooling fan motor roaring.
It is safe to say, I was guilty of neglect.
What is a man to do but to begin to repair the relationship so I called Lexicon for some counseling on the subject. The tech I spoke to encouraged me to become intimate with Lexi. I said please elaborate and he said, your going to have to open her up. Open her up, pull her cards out, clean her, lubricate the fans, clear out the dust and put her back together and restart with the LARC attached.
I did that, she did sound a bit happier and would load again, but not past the boot screen. Yet another couples counseling session later and I was connecting the network connection and looking at the bios and other settings. Basically the 960L is just a big PC. Any of you who know me, know how I feel about the PC. After additional sessions with Lexicon support, we determined that she needed to go in for factory service.
They determined that she has suffered a broken keypad on the LARC and needed a new Motherboard. She received an all expense paid trip to a twenty-one day spa for rebuilding, resting, testing and a thorough spa treatment, my treat of course. She was returned to me in tip top shape with a new and renewed outlook on our relationship. I am treating her with the love and respect she needs with bi-monthly cleaning and re-seating of cards.
On a serious note, the tech support department at Lexicon was great. They have a staff of technicians with several decades of experience and never said that my situation was hopeless. Their customer service was on time and communicated like professionals. It was truly a breath of fresh air.
Recorded by Brad Sayles at Tierra Studios. Brad Sayles is a great local engineer and studio friend. It was a pleasure to have Brad Sayles and Bryan Anthiny in for this fun session.
