Pastor Phyllis Renae Kennedy, a gospel recording artist, choir director, and pastor whose work spanned music ministry and worship leadership, died January 28. She was 67.

Born May 29, 1957, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kennedy began her music involvement at an early age, joining the Prestonians Community Choir. After relocating with her family to Houston, Texas, in 1973, she continued her musical development and, at age 16, became choir director at New Community Baptist Church. There, she organized a 100-voice choir known as New Children of Christ alongside Darryl Rushing.
