Death and Nightingales (2018) is a haunting BBC period drama miniseries based on Eugene McCabe’s acclaimed novel. Set in 1880s Northern Ireland, it follows Beth Winters (Ann Skelly), a young woman trapped in a toxic household with her abusive Protestant stepfather Billy (Matthew Rhys). On her 23rd birthday, Beth plans to escape with her Catholic lover Liam Ward (Jamie Dornan), but betrayal and buried secrets twist her path toward a devastating climax.
Told over three episodes, the series explores religious tension, personal freedom, and moral ambiguity, with a reverse-chronology structure that slowly reveals the roots of Beth’s choices. It’s a slow-burning tale of love, manipulation, and survival, steeped in gothic atmosphere and political unrest.
