Turning back time today and revisiting a home we featured in our very first issue — MILIEU Fall 2013. The home is a 1927 French Normandy style home by noted Dallas architect Henry “Hal” Thomson with interiors by the homeowner Mary Jane Ryburn. The dining room was on the cover but there were so many quiet moments captured by photographer Peter Vitale like the vintage details in one of the bathrooms.

What was originally a screened-in porch is now a brick-floored mudroom designed by Tommy Clements. The painting of a Borzoi ( 19th century ) hangs above a worktable that was cleverly converted into a sink and topped with marble.

Because he is his own client, Charles Peed has indulged in his favorite decorative penchants in his new home. Above his bed, he created a reference to a canopy by installing a folded expanse of khaki fabric that hangs from bars attached to the wall and suspended from the ceiling.

“I like the coziness of a canopy,” he says. “I love anything tented. I could easily live in an upholstered tent. This one has a campaign feel to it.”

And, in keeping with the notion of a traveling military campaign, Peed has hung on the walls a series of 19th-century hand-colored lithograph engravings of Egypt by the Scottish artist David Roberts, who was known for his Colonial-era scenes of the Middle East and North Africa.

“I’ve purposely pinned them to the wall and left them unframed so that they look almost like a postered wallpaper.”
