With a focus on t

he United States, but also going beyond to Europe and elsewhere, MILIEU introduces readers to the best designers and projects – the people and places that, until now, often have gone unnoticed. In shining an editorial light on diverse talent and interior and garden design, each issue of the quarterly magazine is dedicated to embracing the future and acknowledging the past, for what seems new today often has deep roots in the past. Rest in Peace John Saladino 🕊️

We are eternally grateful for Saladino’s creative talents and how he educated us through his legendary work

He once talked with MILIEU about his color philosophy, “Subtle color, deep color, rich color—it’s all part of the illusion that leads to greater depth. It’s not about the color you think you see, it’s the implication of color.”

His work is an art form that makes a lasting impression. Thank you

Such small quarters for shepherds have been subtle features of the English countryside for centuries, but it was only in the Victorian era that they took on newer, more enduring forms, ones referenced today with Red Sky Shepherds Huts designs

The introduction of corrugated metal, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, allowed for curved roofs, and, sturdier more rainproof structures

And cast-iron wheels so they could be rolled were also introduced along the way and are used now on the huts

“We’re trying to maintain, as much as possible, the proportions and curvatures of the old huts,” Adam Bennett of says, “but ours have grown in length and width from those of the distant past.”

Since relocating from Atlanta to Paris during the pandemic, Ann Huff of has mastered the French flea markets.

Recently, MILIEU’s Avery Bowers () joined Ann for a morning at Les Puces. As they strolled through the Paul Berte Marché and Serpette, Ann displayed her astute understanding of each stall, greeting vendors personally and demonstrating the relationships that make her approach so special.

For those who dream of experiencing France in a design-driven way, Huff Harrington offers trips four times a year to Paris and Provence. They arrange every detail, ensuring that the attendees’ French finds are safely packaged on the container and arrive stateside.

Despite an inspection report that would give most buyers pause, the new owners of this home on the Laguna Beach Historic Register were undeterred

With the help of interior designer Wendi Young and architect Tim Nicol, they cleaned up the interiors and restored the exteriors

The mahogany floors and woodwork were revived, and walls were repainted an invigorating shade of white

A pot with roses underplanted with Erigeron karvinskianus on the grounds of an English Georgian-era estate restored with today’s environment in mind. The 80-acre parkland has earned an official organic certification. Among its hallmarks are the myriad decorative containers in which plants and small trees flourish.
