A federal court in El Paso will hear arguments in a lawsuit challenging Texas’ new congressional map this week.

Civil rights groups say the mid-decade redistricting is an unconstitutional racial gerrymander and are seeking to block it before 2026 election filings begin.

“The racial composition of these new districts cannot be explained by partisanship, and they really focused on race, just as they were told to do, and all of that is illegal,” said Robert Weiner, voting rights project director.

A panel of statewide appeals court justices will soon decide whether Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton can — at least temporarily — enforce case reporting rules on attorneys for the state's larger, mostly Democratic counties, including Harris.

Statewide appeals court justices heard oral arguments Wednesday in Attorney General Ken Paxton's appeal of a ruling against his office that would temporarily stop him from enforcing case reporting rules against primarily Democratic elected attorneys in the state's most populous counties.
