STATE CONTROL TAKEOVER | "I was very disappointed and frustrated..." - BEAUMONT ISD Supt. Dr. Shannon Allen. Dr. Allen made the comments moments ago while confirming the news the Texas Education Agency will take state control of BISD. She said 16 of 22 campuses showed improvements and argues she disagrees with the decision of the TEA. Allen says she believes the better decision would have been to fully close the struggling Fehl-Price Elementary School and move those students to other schools. She said it would have been the "least disruptive" of the options. She said she did not know the timeline yet but expects TEA to begin to assert control in early 2026. Until then she said she and the current Board of Trustees will continue to "do the work." Saying, "Our role will continue to be the same" until a conservator is appointed. It follows a TEA takeover of the district in April 2014 - then a return to local control in 2020. The TEA stated the takeover in '14 was due to financial mismanagement, embezzlement (over $4 million by employees), and a standardized test cheating scandal.
