Youād probably think I was absolutely INSANE if you knew the level of detail Iāve researched and studied YouTube growth strategy.
For years, I poured hours into reading articles, listening to podcasts, paying hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars for coursesāand of courseāwatching YouTube videos about strategy and the ever-evolving platform landscape. I spent even more time trying to implement nearly all of them.
And honestly? It wasnāt useful.
āØIām not saying those strategies donāt workābut they definitely didnāt work for me.
Whatās wild is how much they dictated the content I created. Sure, early on I made videos about anything just because I wanted to and was excited to explore the craft. But eventually, the strategies I learned started to steer everythingāmy video topics, how I planned and presented information, how I edited, all of it.
So even though I TECHNICALLY had creative freedom, I was still tying myself to all these ārulesā experts said I had to follow to be successful. And honestly, they were credible sources with experience and proof to back up their claimsāso why would I, just some girl trying to grow a channel, think I knew better?
But after spending YEARS of my life following advice that didnāt lead to the results Iād hoped for, hereās what Iāve learned:
ADVICE IS JUST A SALAD BAR⦠at the buffet of life.
Just because something worked for someone else doesnāt mean itāll work for you. Itās totally fine to try things, but if something doesnāt sit right with youāor worseādonāt keep doing it.
Just because house salads and Caesars are popular doesnāt mean you canāt INVENT YOUR OWN SALAD. The same goes for advice.
Sure, experts are experts for a reason, and sometimes they have great ideas. But youāre probably not going to pile EVERYTHING from the salad bar onto your plateāand you donāt have to take every single piece of advice either (trust me, I tried).
So be discerning. Trust yourself.
āØTrust that youāre doing a good job being selective.
āØAnd if itās time to pivot, trust that too.
