When her neighbour’s house was shelled, 8-year-old Shaimaa suffered horrific injuries and her right arm and leg had to be amputated.

There are 600,000 children in Rafah, terrified of what’s next. From displacement and the threat of bombings to starvation and disease, so many are suffering the unimaginable, and now they are trapped in an overcrowded space with death getting closer.

There is nowhere safe for children in Rafah to go, but there is a way out of their nightmare:

Stop the war.

Release the hostages.

End the killing of children.

In 2018, George Smith received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his technique called phage display, which uses bacteriophage – a virus that infects bacteria with its genes – to evolve new protein. This method has led to new pharmaceuticals.

Smith created his first phage display construct with natural phage from a bacteria virus and materials he received from 2015 chemistry laureate Paul Modrich. In this photograph, he is holding 0.5 ml liquid of the solution he used when he first applied the phage display method.
