Upclose Katy Magazine UpClose Magazine exist because there is a story behind every business & smile, and we would like to But more importantly, a community is made up of people.

Hello Neighbors,

A community this size needs a voice, something that reflects the broad opinions, lifestyles and the way we live. And people, naturally, have stories. What do your kids think about their schools? Where's a good place to find a dentist? How about that new place off of 99? Our aim is for you to pick up this magazine and have answers to all of those questions. I created UpClose Magaz

ine back in 1995 in an effort to help promote area businesses. As a shop owner myself, I felt there was a better way to communicate to homeowners what the area had to offer in goods and services. With that idea in mind, UpClose Magazine was taken from concept to reality with a huge leap of faith that both readers and area businesses would embrace and support my belief. Now we’ve added a Katy edition to our family of Magazines and we've added new members to our team who are as diverse and eclectic as this very community. So be looking for Stephanie Sherrill featured on the cover, Melissa & James Ives our new team members as well as longtime team members Sara Adams, Jennifer Pappas-Blancas and Maggie Beil stopping by to say hello. So if our angle seems a little feel-good or touchy-feely, it's only because we're being honest. The people in these pages are our friends, neighbors and co-workers. They could have picked anywhere to live and do business. They chose to do it here. That speaks volumes for them already! Upcoming Features: Do you know a candidate for our Successful Men in Business issue? Contact UpClose Magazine because there is a story behind every business & smile, and we would like to help tell yours....

Happy reading! Gina Pizzini

Child Advocates of Fort Bend Announces 2024 Christmas Home Tour Dates

Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s Christmas Home Tour is excited to announce the 33rd annual Christmas Home Tour to be held on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, 2024. Shown (L to R) are: Pat Somers and Jim McClellan, representing the Presenting Sponsor, Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation and Child Advocates of Fort Bend CEO Ruthanne Mefford.

This event began 33 years ago as a fundraiser to keep the agency’s doors open. A group of volunteers opened their homes, decorated them for Christmas, baked cookies and charged admission. The tour was a success and has since become a Fort Bend County holiday tradition.

“We have a lot of fun things in store for our guests,” stated Child Advocates of Fort Bend Events Specialist Tarina Sheridan. We offer unique sponsorship opportunities and NEW this year, an Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt and Merry Mocktails on Friday evening. Our Merry Merchandise area will feature an opportunity to purchase beautiful and unique ornaments and buy a chance to win a holiday décor item at our raffle. You can expect live entertainment by local musicians and homemade refreshments. Tickets are $35 and go on sale November 1 by visiting www.cafb.org.”

The Christmas Home Tour welcomes more than 1,800 guests over the two days in some of Fort Bend’s most beautiful neighborhoods including homes in Alkire Lakes, Venetian Estates and Sugar Creek. They will all be beautifully decorated for Christmas ranging in styles that will compete for your personal favorite.

More than 700 volunteers will help as hosts in the homes, serve as entertainers or by baking delicious cookies. This is a spirited community event, but most importantly it is a fundraiser which supports programs and services that benefit the children served by Child Advocates of Fort Bend. In 2023, the agency served 3,293 children and families. Your support of this event is essential to helping abused and neglected children in our community.

Sponsorships of $425 - $10,000 are now available. Please consider joining as a sponsor. It is a delightful event for a worthy cause. To become a sponsor or for more information, please contact Tarina at [email protected].

The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement are implementing a “No Refusal” initiative over the
July 4 th holiday.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, July 4 th through July 6 th , law enforcement will be watching for drivers who are impaired by alcohol or other substances.

Attorneys from the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office will work overnight to draft search warrants for local judges to authorize a blood draw from drivers who have demonstrated evidence of their intoxication. Nurses will be on hand to draw blood once a warrant is obtained.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld blood search warrants as a legal means to obtain evidence in DWI cases from suspects who are arrested but refuse to take a breath or blood test.

“Please be safe this July 4 th and arrange a ride or drive sober” said District Attorney Brian Middleton. “Enjoy your celebrations and keep Fort Bend County a great place to live, work and play.”

The District Attorney’s No Refusal initiative is funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.
