زهران ممدانی، متولد اوگاندا و عضو مجلس ایالتی نیویورک، از اکتبر ۲۰۲۴ نامزدی خود را برای شهرداری نیویورک اعلام کرد و با پیروزی در انتخابات عمومی ۴ نوامبر ۲۰۲۵، به عنوان اولین شهردار مسلمان در تاریخ ۳۶۰ ساله شهر نیویورک شناخته شد. او قرار است از ۱ ژانویه ۲۰۲۶ رسماً کارش را آغاز کند.
او فرزند محمود ممدانی (Mahmood Mamdani) است، استاد و نویسنده معروف و اهل خانوادهای هندیاصل و مسلمان گجراتی، و میرا نایر (Mira Nair)، کارگردان برجسته پنجابی و هندو.
او نماد نسلی تازه از سیاستمداران است که عدالت اجتماعی، برابری و زندگی قابلپرداخت برای طبقه کارگر را در قلب برنامههای خود قرار دادهاند.
برنامههای او شامل موارد زیر هستند:
• افزایش دستمزد کارگران و حمایت از اتحادیههای کارگری.
• اجبار یا تشویق به ساخت مسکن ارزان قیمت از طریق تنظیم مقررات شهری.
• تغییرات اساسی در سیاست مالیاتی شهر و فشار بر شرکتهای بزرگ برای پرداخت سهم بیشتر.
• سرمایهگذاری گسترده در آموزش عمومی، بهداشت عمومی و خدمات اجتماعی.

منتقدان هشدار میدهند که این برنامهها ممکن است باعث مشکلات زیر شوند:
• افزایش هزینههای عملیاتی شهر و فشار بر بودجه عمومی، که ممکن است منجر به افزایش مالیات یا کسری بودجه شود.
• خروج یا کاهش سرمایهگذاری شرکتها و سرمایهگذاران خصوصی بهخاطر مقررات سختتر و مالیات بالاتر، که میتواند اشتغال و رشد اقتصادی را کند کند.
• تورمِ هزینه مسکن با اینکه هدف کاهش آن است، بهخاطر افزایش تقاضا برای مسکن ارزان و محدودیتهای ساخت ممکن است بلندپروازانه و غیرقابل پایدار شود.
• کاهش کیفیت خدمات عمومی اگر بار افزایش سرمایهگذاری بیش از توان مدیریتی شهر باشد، یا منابع مالی کافی تأمین نشود.
• افزایش قطبیسازی سیاسی و فرهنگی، چون بعضی شهروندان ممکن است برنامهها را دخالت گستردهتر دولت در زندگی فردی تلقی کنند و مخالفت کنند.
در واکنش به پیروزی او، دونالد ترامپ گفت ممدانی نه یک سوسیالیست بلکه «یک کمونیست واقعی» است و سیاستهایش را تهدیدی برای اقتصاد آزاد آمریکا دانست.

Zohran Mamdani, born in Uganda and a New York State Assembly member, announced his candidacy for NYC mayor in October 2024. He won the November 4, 2025 general election, becoming the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s 360-year history, and is set to take office on January 1, 2026.
He is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, a renowned professor and author from a Gujarati Muslim family, and Mira Nair, a celebrated Punjabi filmmaker and Hindu.
He represents a new generation of leaders who place social justice, equality, and affordable living for the working class at the core of their agenda.
His program includes:
• Raising workers’ wages and supporting labor unions.
• Mandating or encouraging affordable housing through municipal regulations.
• Overhauling the city’s tax policy and putting pressure on large corporations to pay a greater share.
• Investing heavily in public education, public health, and social services.
• Restricting or restructuring city contracts with private firms and strengthening the public sector.
Critics warn these proposals could lead to:
• Rising city operating costs and strain on the public budget, possibly resulting in higher taxes or budget deficits.
• Reduced private investment and slower economic growth due to stricter regulations and higher taxes.
• Housing cost inflation: although the goal is to lower costs, increased demand for affordable units and construction constraints might backfire.
• Reduced quality of public services if the investment burden exceeds administrative capacity or if funding falls short.
• Heightened political and cultural polarization, as some citizens may view the programs as excessive government intrusion.
Reacting to his victory, Donald Trump called Mamdani “a real communist, not just a socialist,” claiming his policies threaten America’s free-market economy.
