Prof. Engobo Emeseh hosts today's village square conversation, alongside Dr Bralade.

She is a professor of Environmental and Energy Law with decades of experience in higher education. She has held several leadership roles including Head of School, Interim Dean, and Institute Director for Learning and Teaching. Recognised in 2020 among the UK's Phenomenal Women professors, she is known for promoting inclusion, innovation, and student-focused learning.

A researcher and policy expert, she works with governments, civil society, and international organisations on capacity building and policy development.

Outside academia, she is deeply involved in equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, with a particular interest in culture and identity in the diaspora.

A mother herself and a long-term mentor, she launched the Diasporan Mum podcast, as a platform to build a global village for parents navigating parenting across cultures and raising children secure in their identities.

She holds a PhD from the University of Dundee (Ford Foundation Fellow), an MSc with distinction from Cardiff University (Chevening Scholar), and a first class from the Nigeria Law School.

Joined by Dr. Bralade today to talk firstborn duty, parenting challenges in the diaspora, family responsibility, black tax and much more.

Joining us today is Dr. Bralade, who leads engineering and operations for one of Dow's largest chemical plants worldwide, with teams across the US Gulf Coast and India.

Over 15 years, she has saved the company $34 million and led its compliance program. Her career has spanned process engineering, R&D, and executive leadership. She holds a PhD in Leadership and Management Studies plus degrees in Chemical Engineering.

She also runs LeadEssence Coaching and Consulting and has written two books on leadership.

She is also raising a family in the diaspora, facing the same questions from "Same Family Values, Different Era": what to keep, what to change, and what "the village" means from an ocean away.

She joins Prof. Engobo today to talk firstborn duty, parenting challenges in the diaspora, family responsibility, black tax and much more.

As parents, we spend so much time taking care of the 'important' and 'urgent' things! And oftentimes we don't make that list!

But taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It is vital for effective parenting.

Because we can’t adequately pour into our children when we are running on empty.

Sometimes, rest, support, quiet time and taking care of your own wellbeing can be the most selfless thing you can do!

Some parents today want their children to have an easier life than they did.

So they hire help, do everything for them, and sometimes forget to give them responsibilities at home.

But children need to learn how to contribute too. Chores are part of training.

What do you think?

Should children have household responsibilities?
