The Local Illusion

First it was Marina's Bakery in League City - the one we all thought was baking fresh every morning. Turns out, a lot of those "freshly baked" pastries were coming from somewhere else. Bought, boxed, and passed off as their own. They packed up and disappeared.

Now it's Kens Henz down in Santa Fe. According to ABC13 Houston, those"farm-fresh" eggs everyone's been buying weren't actually from their own hens. The FDA and state are looking into it, and folks are left feeling fooled.

It's a shame, really. People want to trust "local." They want to know their dollars are going to honest, hard-working folks who actually make what they sell. Most do. But a few cut corners, and the rest pay for it.

Supporting local still matters - it always will. But maybe we've gotta look a little closer. Visit the farms. Ask a few questions. Don't be shy about wanting to know where your food really comes from.

Because "farm-fresh" shouldn't come from a warehouse. And "local" shouldn't just be a label someone prints to make a buck.

I guess I was thinking about that story today, because this ended up on the stove: rosemary, broth, mushrooms, and slow-simmered beef.
