The City of Howell, Michigan

The City of Howell, Michigan

The City of Howell grieves the loss of life in Minneapolis and hopes that justice for George Floyd comes quickly. We respect the rights of individuals and/or groups to peacefully protest and we are dedicated to being accommodating for the needs of those who want to voice their concerns through that avenue. The City of Howell and the Howell Police Department are actively working to partner with those that want to peacefully protest to ensure safety for all.

Unfortunately, the City of Howell has recently been targeted through social media and threatened with acts of violence. The potential for peaceful protests to be hijacked by outside groups, similar to what has happened in other communities, is always possible. The Howell Police Department, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other state and federal agencies, are continuing to monitor and investigate any and all threats against our community.

For the past several decades the City of Howell has made efforts to eradicate the negative racial stigma that some have associated with our City. We will continue these efforts as it is paramount that we act and are perceived as a welcoming community for all. We believe ending this stigma and furthering diversity in our community takes a village – we urge community members to continue to reach out to your City officials to share your ideas on how we can achieve this goal. While the City of Howell has made significant progress over the years, we can and always want to do better.

A successful equine rescue was performed today by HAFD. She was over a mile into the woods and heavily stuck in a marsh. Crews worked to free her and assisted her to dry land where she was able to bear weight again. Thank you to Animal Control Officer Lockhart, the neighbors, and veterinarian who aided us is returning her home.

RIP

It is with great sorrow and deepest regret that we inform you of the passing of one of our most avid supporters. Bernie Hager, father of Captain Bryan Hager passed at home. Bernie was well known through out the fire service for his eagerness to help, always having a hot coffee or cold Gatorade for crews when they were sent for rehab at DART. We will always remember Bernie for great conversation that helped lighten the mood on the most serious of scenes, his jokes at the department open house, and his visits to the station, to stop in and check on us. We are greatful for everything throughout the years. Bernie will be missed by all. Please keep the memories you shared with Bernie and his family close to heart. At this time plans for a celebration of life are being discussed for a date to be shared.

Hey, Livingston County! The 2020 Census helps all of us, so make sure that your entire family is counted. Taking just 10 minutes to finish your Census helps ensure our local hospitals, schools, and community services get the funding they deserve. And did we mention that our county is currently the #1 county for responses in Michigan? Help us keep it that way!

The census is quick, easy, and all of your responses are confidential. Either respond online at www.my2020census.gov or by phone at 844-330-2020.

And yes, we know that this family picture is fake. It's a fact that all family pictures ALWAYS turn out perfect. 😉

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Children need to be taught how to respond to and interact with the world around them.

Making sure that they have the language to explain how they feel is one way to build strength in your family.

Problem solving, giving words to feelings, modeling empathy, and helping your child learn how to be a good friend are all part of building up their social and emotional abilities.

Per Livingston County Clerk Elizabeth Hundley, voters have until 4:00 p.m. today to request an absentee ballot from their city or township clerk. The voter must make the request in person with their clerk and must vote the ballot in the clerk’s office; the voter is not permitted to leave the office with the ballot.

Voters who wish to spoil their absentee ballot for any reason also have until 4:00 p.m. today. They must appear in person to their city or township clerk and must vote the ballot in the clerk’s office as well. Voters who have already returned their AV ballot may not request to spoil their absentee ballot on Election Day.

Voters who have not received or returned their AV ballot have additional options on election day. They should contact their city or township clerk directly and follow the instructions the clerk provides. A voter may use the following link to locate their city or township clerk. https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/

In order to be counted, all absentee ballots must be returned to the city or township clerk by 8:00 p.m. when the polls close tomorrow evening. Voters should return their absentee ballot in person rather than by mail at this point.

Charles Dickens words, “It was the worst of times; it was the best of times” seem to be particularly appropriate to our current situation. There are some people who take the opportunity to scam vulnerable people with fake Covid-19 test kits, others who hoard supplies that everyone needs and try to sell these items at exorbitant prices. However, there are so many people of various ages from all around the world who demonstrate the caring and generous side of humanity in a crisis. These individuals reach out to people in need and find creative ways to help. They are people from all walks of life, who don’t expect anything in return. Then there are the first responders who always run toward danger and the doctors, nurses, and medical workers who show up every day to face this invisible enemy threatening their own health. The food and drug industry workers make sure that products are available for all of us. This is a terrifying and uncertain time but it is also a time of great hope because people are realizing what’s really important in life, the lives and well-being of family, friends and mankind. The world is becoming kinder and we are noticing.
