Cats of Rome by Traer Scott🐈

Rome is home to more than 300,000 cats. Of these, at least one-third are thought to be feral. Roman cats are protected by law and have the right to live where they choose in architectural ruins, parks, and neighborhoods throughout the city.

In seventy-five brilliant color photographs, Rome’s feline denizens are shown as they live naturally among stunning, classical backdrops, with visual whispers of the gattaras—the often nameless and plentiful women of Rome who volunteer to care for the feral colonies.

SHOPKEEPING: Stories, Advice, and Observations by Peter Miller, of , is a love letter to small shops, shop owners, and shop patrons.

“There is a tradition of shopkeeping, a tradition of codes, etiquette, and customs. For the most part, it is an oral history, passed along, person to person. You learn to be a retailer—not by going to college, but by going to work. You learn from people who have learned how to run a shop.”—“Introduction” to Shopkeeping

For more than four decades, Peter Miller has run a design bookshop that shares his name in Seattle. Readers are taken on a shopkeeping journey and will come to understand along the way that small shops characterize our towns and cities, making them unique, special, and worth visiting and living near.

By the end, you can’t help wanting to own a shop.

“We are all familiar with the saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words,’ and yet we seem to have an instinctual need to annotate photos with captions. With a word or phrase or paragraph, a caption flexes its muscles in front of an unsuspecting photo, taking on a variety of upstaging roles: it can comment and contextualize; it may excuse, enthuse, criticize, or deface…The urge to comment on the pictures of our lives seems deeply rooted in the human psyche. As longtime collectors and curators of vernacular photography, we have firsthand experience with this urge and phenomenon.”
– Barbara Levine ( ) and Paige Ramey ( ), from their new book CAPTION THIS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION OF AMUSING COMMENTS, SNARKY ASIDES, AND ROMANTIC ADMISSIONS, just out today.

Through 150 color and black-and-white vintage photographs of everyday people over the past 100 years, and arranged in nine thematic chapters (This Is Me Grooving, This Is My Snarky Side, This Is Me In Love, etc.), CAPTION THIS is a celebration of a century of personal photo captions, in all their forms, themes, and voices. It explores the captivating (and often contradictory) relationship between what we see in photos and what we say about them.

A unique coffee table or bookshelf delight for photography, pop culture, and vintage enthusiasts.

In November of 2016, amidst a changing political landscape, Navied Mahdavian moved with his wife and dog from San Francisco to an off-the-grid cabin on six acres in rural Idaho. He had never fished, gardened, hiked, hunted, or lived in a snowy place. But there, he could own land, realize his dream of being an artist, and start a family—a Millennial dream.

Over the next three years, Mahdavian leaned into the wonders of the natural Idaho landscape and found himself adjusting to and enjoying a slower pace of living. But beyond the boundaries of his six acres, he was confronted with the realities of America’s political shifts and forced to confront the question: DO I BELONG HERE?

THIS COUNTRY is a beautifully written and unflinchingly honest graphic memoir charting Navied’s growth and struggles as an artist, citizen, and new father in rural Idaho. It celebrates his love of place and honors the relationships he made there, touching on dynamics like culture, environment, and identity in America, and even articulating difficult moments of racism and brutality he found there as a Middle Eastern American. With wit, compassion, and a sense of humor, Mahdavian’s insider perspective offers a unique portrait of one of the most remote and wild areas of the American West.

THIS COUNTRY: SEARCHING FOR HOME IN (VERY) RURAL AMERICA is now available wherever books and ebooks are sold. 💛
