Same hydrangeas. Same garden. Just five weeks apart! 🤍🩷

On August 1, my Fire Light Tidbits were dressed in crisp white. By September 8, they had traded their summer whites for gorgeous mauve pink. Talk about a seasonal wardrobe change! 😍

We’ve all done it. 😂 Before buying another mum for temporary fall color, consider adding one of these fall-blooming perennials to your New England garden:

💜 New England asters
💛 Goldenrod
🧡 Sneezew**d
💗 Autumn-blooming sedum

These can return year after year while providing valuable late-season food for pollinators. Early fall is still a good time to plant, but get them into the ground soon and keep them watered while their roots establish!

Swamp milkw**d (Asclepias incarnata) is native to New Hampshire and a host plant for monarch caterpillars. 🐛🦋

Want to try growing from seed?

🍂 Sow outside in late fall and cover with soil very lightly.
❄️ Let winter provide the cold, moist period the seeds need.
💧 In spring, keep the area moist while they germinate.
🌱 You can also winter sow them in milk jugs!

This is what I call my “chaos garden”… and in September, the chaos has a purpose!

Goldenrod, agastache, Joe-Pye w**d, jewelw**d, milkw**d, partridge pea, black-eyed Susans and more are fueling bees about to hibernate, monarchs and migrating hummingbirds. The seeds, berries and insects also feed the birds and wildlife. 🐝🦋🐦
