1. Listen to my new song on Spotify
2. Save it to your library (click the heart by the song title)
3. Follow me on Spotify (click on the artist link and then click follow)
4. Share this post and encourage your friends to check it out and do the same!

Adding the song to your playlists makes a difference, every bit helps! I appreciate the support.

How It's Made - ribbon microphone

An awesome video about the creation of the AEA Ribbon Microphone!

Here's another excellent "How It's Made" episode showing the assembly of an AEA ribbon microphone. This mic is almost $4000.

Don't immediately reach for the EQ knob, and don't overdo it with the reverb!

These are two of the biggest mistakes new engineers make. Rather than fiddling with EQ if you don't like the way something sounds, try changing the source first. If you are miking a guitar for example, try moving the mic around to alternate positions relative to the acoustic guitar (or amp, if it is an electric guitar). Small adjustments can make huge differences in the sound. If you have a synthesizer sound that is dull, try opening up the filter a little or change the synth patch in some other manner to get the effect you want. To add a nice sweetening to elements of your mix or to add emphasis to a solo instrument without using EQ, try using one of the BBE Sonic Maximizer or Aphex Aural Exciter processors. They now make software emulations of these processors also! http://instagr.am/p/SgwSBnsyWo/

Microphones!

Start out with at least one good condenser microphone that you can use to capture vocals and acoustic instruments.

The Rode NT-2A is a good and affordable mic for recording both vocals and acoustic guitars. You can certainly do better than the NT-2A, but you’ll also pay a lot more. If you are going to be recording high sound pressure levels (e.g., guitar amplifiers), then you can't beat the Shure SM-57 dynamic mic for about $80. If your studio budget is really slim, two good and very low-cost condenser mics to look at are the Audio-Technical AT2020 (about $65 online at B&H Photo) and the MXL MCI SP-1 (less than $50 online at B&H Photo or PSSL.com). http://instagr.am/p/STo6AYsyXY/

The DrumDial is an excellent tool for any drummer! This will save you lots of time (and frustration if you don't know how to tune drums). Brand new head? No problem. Bust out the gauge put in on the drumhead and take a reading. It's very easy! It's also comes with a handy tuning chart with common shell sizes and different drum head types to give you an idea of how tight to tune your drums. If you use this product correctly in accordance with the ranges listed on the tuning chart, I guarantee you will find your tom/snare/bass drum's optimal resonance (a.k.a. a good sound)
