The Yurok Tribe in California has achieved a historic victory by regaining ancestral lands that were taken from them more than 120 years ago. According to NBC Bay Area, the tribe reclaimed territory around Blue Creek in northwestern California, a place where their ancestors had fished, hunted and gathered for generations before timber companies took control.
According to US News, more than 47,000 acres of land along the Klamath River were formally returned to the Yurok Tribe in May 2025. This area, about the size of Washington, D.C., includes old-growth forests, sacred sites and cold-water tributaries that are vital for salmon and steelhead survival. According to Sky News, the transfer covers roughly 73 square miles, making it the largest land-back deal in California’s history.
The Yurok Tribe lost 90 percent of its territory during the California Gold Rush, suffering massacres, disease and displacement. This land return is not only a step toward justice but also a major environmental milestone. According to tribal leaders, the reclaimed lands will help protect endangered species such as the northern spotted owl and restore salmon runs that are central to Yurok culture.
