This is my second book by Mackenna Cleaver in this series, and I’m officially attached to the Kane brothers.

I loved Alex and Beth’s story. Alex being completely obsessed with Beth while she is firmly committed to disliking him made their dynamic so much fun. Add in the fact that he secretly owns both her bookstore space AND her apartment, lives right next door, and has basically engineered the world’s most suspiciously affordable lease just to keep her close.

The Kane brothers are still one of my favorite parts of this series. Their banter is so good, and I love the way they constantly give each other a hard time while also showing up for one another when it matters.

The suspense surrounding Beth’s stalker added another layer to the story and gave us plenty of protective, possessive Alex moments, which I was obviously not mad about.

My one complaint? I missed the annual Kane brothers lake house retreat!

Another really fun read in this series, and I’m already looking forward to the next Kane brother, Leo, in Risk It With You. I just really hope these men make it back to the lake.

John Green waited eight years to write this book. It took me two days to read it.

I loved this, but I also love John Green, so perhaps I was doomed from the beginning.

I am always amazed by how personal his writing feels and how easily he manages to make me emotional. I was completely enthralled by the story and the prose, but especially by Kai and Juniper.

They are flawed, complicated, and very human. Watching them try to connect with each other while still trying to figure out who they are made this such a touching story for me. There is something about the way Green writes people who desperately want to be understood, even when they don’t fully understand themselves yet, that gets me every single time.

I also loved the exploration of fame, public versus private life, and what happens when everyone suddenly feels entitled to a piece of you.

This book does deal with trauma and some heavier topics, so I definitely recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading.

Tender, messy, emotional, and incredibly human.

This was my first book by Mase Evans, and I really enjoyed it!

The fall atmosphere was exactly what I wanted, and I loved the small-town setting, especially the friendships. Everyone gave each other a hard time, but underneath all the teasing, they genuinely showed up for one another. That kind of friend group will get me every time.

Avery needing a date to her brother’s wedding and ending up with Jax, the ex who left four years ago, made for such a fun second-chance setup. And when I say this romance was a slow burn… I mean sloooooooow burn.

My one issue was that I kept waiting for some big reveal about exactly why Jax broke up with Avery and left in the first place. I thought we were building toward a deeper explanation at the end, and it never quite came. I definitely wanted more closure there.

But overall, I really liked the characters, the town, the friendships, the fall vibes, and obviously Sir Fluffington.

If you want a spooky season read that is actually creepy, completely messes with your mind, and won’t take you three weeks to finish, We Used to Live Here is the one.

This book genuinely scared me. It’s unsettling, weird, claustrophobic, and had me questioning what was real right along with the characters.

And bonus: it’s short. Because apparently being psychologically disturbed is much more convenient when it fits neatly into a weekend.

Perfect October read.
