It's Day 2 of Awareness Month!

We often share the fact that Spina Bifida is sometimes referred to as a "snowflake condition." But why? Like snowflakes, no two cases are exactly the same.

Did you know?

There is a wide range of types of Spina Bifida and a wide spectrum of effects within each type!

We will delve into some of those types later in the month.

Spina bifida affects each person differently. The severity can range from:
Mild, with little to no physical impact to severe, involving paralysis, bladder/bowel issues, hydrocephalus, and other complex medical needs, and everything in between.

Even two people with the same type and lesion level may experience different mobility abilities (some walk, others use orthotics, walkers, or wheelchairs), varying cognitive effects (especially if hydrocephalus is present), and unique health complications or surgeries.

More importantly, every individual is one of a kind with distinct personal strengths, goals, and personalities.

We often say Spina Bifida has many faces, and SBAK serves them all. No matter where someone falls on the spectrum of ability or disability, we celebrate their uniqueness and the positive impact they bring to our community.

How Common Is Spina Bifida?

Spina Bifida occurs in about 1 in every 2,700 live births in the United States. It is the most common permanently disabling birth defect.

Thanks to medical advances, people with spina bifida today are living longer, healthier, and more independent lives than ever before. ๐Ÿ’›

Mobility is a Spectrum

Mobility needs are different for each person with spina bifida. Some may walk without assistance, others use braces, crutches, or walkers, and many use wheelchairs.

These tools arenโ€™t limitations โ€” theyโ€™re ways to gain independence, freedom, and access to the world. ๐Ÿ’›โ™ฟ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Disabled people have a long history of being unemployed or underemployed. Creating accessible environments where we can thrive in a workplace goes a long way. Access does not start and end at a wheelchair ramp or an automatic door. It also looks like:

โ€” ASL Interpreters for virtual meetings
โ€” Flexible work schedule or working hours
โ€” A livable wage
โ€” Remote work options

According to the Center for Research on Disability, 46.3% of those surveyed who identified as individuals with disabilities ages 18-63 were employed, in contrast with 79.5% of those interviewed of the same age range who identified as individuals without disabilities.

Research indicates that youth benefit from mentoring, which is associated with enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence, first-hand exposure to the workplace, and increased career awareness! AAPD's Disability Mentoring Day program is a large-scale national effort to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through career exploration and ongoing mentoring relationships. The goals of DMD are to empower mentees to pursue their career and professional aspirations, build mentoring relationships, and drive systemic change in workplace inclusivity for people with disabilities.
