Last week I took a poll of what was the hardest thing about about pivoting. Starting over, letting go, or knowing where to pivot. And it was dead even! So let’s start with figuring out WHERE to pivot. Here are 5 tips to try:
1. Ask your friends and family “What kinds of problems to do you call me for help with?” Don’t ask “what do you see me doing” because that could tap into a natural quality you have but not the right job title. Asking what kinds of problems you help people solve can be a good indicator that that’s a direction to explore.
2. Ask yourself “If time and money weren’t an issue what would I choose to do.” Sometimes we talk ourselves out of what we ACTUALLY want because we think it’s not lucrative or it will take too long to build.
3. When are you in a state of flow? When do you lose time because you’re wrapped up in what you’re doing. This is an indicator that you not only enjoy that task but that you’re also naturally good at it.
4. What parts of your current job do you enjoy? The idea of sales gave me the ick until I realized that that was my favorite part of my job! I was then able to step away from marketing and dive in and ended up tripling my salary!
5. The MOST important one - When/where are you your best self? I realized when I’m on stage, off stage I’m a better human too! I’m friendly and extroverted and genuinely excited to learn from people. Knowing where you’re naturally your best self is the best way to find your purpose!
