BUSY WEEK AHEAD - Wednesday will be the first of several light snow chances as we enter into a much colder pattern. Several clippers will dive into the state from mid-week through the end of the weekend. Each wave will bring light snow followed by a bitter blast of air.

Too early for specific snow totals, but central IN probably stays around an inch or two in general over the next several days. Not a lot, but certainly enough for slick travel conditions.

ANOTHER BIG DROP -After a day of unseasonably mild temperatures this afternoon, we're in for a big dose of reality starting tonight.

We'll hit our high temperatures on Wednesday just after Midnight, and temperatures will steadily fall through the day. Wind chill values will likely fall to the single digits late in the day.

Back to the "we don't get snow like we used to in Indiana" comment. As pointed out by viewers, it's more like "snow doesn't stay on the ground like it did in the last few decades."

Here is the annual average of days with 3"+ snow depth by decade in Indy. Yes, that is true, looking back to recent decades. The 2020s so far are actually more comparable to the 1950s. Each decade had around 6 days a year with 3"+ snow depth.

The 1970s take the crown for snowfall and number of days with 3"+ on the ground, with an annual average of 21 days.

SNOW FORECAST - We flip the switch back to full-time winter starting Tuesday night. Scattered snow showers will fill in from the north much of the day on Wednesday. For , we're not looking at much, but a dusting/coating could make for some slick spots.

Higher accumulations are expected up north, especially along Lake Michigan, where lake effect snow bands could deposit several inches of snow.

SNOW CHANCES THIS WEEK - We'll have a chance for some light snow accumulation this Wednesday into Thursday. A cold front will push through the state on Wednesday, and will flip the switch from rain to snow by Wednesday afternoon. Accumulations will be light, but a quick coating could make for some slick travel on Wednesday evening.

LAKE EFFECT SNOW - With a colder setup coming our way by the middle of the week, the lake effect snow machine will begin to crank back up on Wednesday.

Below is the probability of 3"+ of snow through Thursday. In Porter and La Porte counties, we're over 75%.

In fact, some of our projections are going closer to 6" in some of those counties.

A few of those bands could move down I-65 into central Indiana, but the general theme for downstate is more of a dusting from Wednesday into Thursday

BITING WIND CHILLS - We're back to sub-zero wind chills coming up this weekend. An arctic front will move through the state on Saturday, pushing in much colder temps to the state this Sunday.
