KNOX COUNTY MAN FACES SEVEN FELONY COUNTS; TRIALS SET FOR DEC. 1

A Knox County man faces seven felony charges in two separate criminal cases pending in Knox Superior Court 1.

Jack Wayne Sears, 32, of Wheatland, recently appeared in court following an investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

The first case was filed Aug. 10 and includes four charges:

Sears is charged with Level 3 felony r**e, Level 4 felony sexual misconduct with a minor, Level 6 felony strangulation and Level 6 felony distribution or exhibition of obscene matter involving a child.

Court records list July 1, 2024, as the alleged offense date in that case.

A second case was filed Aug. 13. It charges Sears with Level 1 felony child molesting, Level 4 felony in**st involving a victim younger than 16 and Level 4 felony sexual misconduct with a minor.

The alleged offense date in the second case is listed as Jan. 1, 2020.

The publicly available probable-cause affidavits are redacted, and the court records do not provide additional details about the allegations.

Sears appeared for initial hearings Aug. 12 and Aug. 14. The court entered preliminary not-guilty pleas on his behalf and issued no-contact orders.

At the initial hearings, the court set Sears’ bond at $25,000 cash only in the first case and $75,000 cash only in the second case. Those initial bond amounts total $100,000.

The court later granted a request from prosecutors to add another bond condition in the second case.

In the motion, the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office alleged that Sears had used the jail’s electronic messaging system to communicate with his wife, whom prosecutors identified as the alleged victim’s mother.

Prosecutors alleged the messages appeared to be an attempt to influence the alleged victim. The motion requested that Sears also be prohibited from contacting his wife. The court granted the request Aug. 15.

Both cases are currently scheduled for jury trials at 9 a.m. Dec. 1. Trial dates remain subject to change as the cases proceed.

The charges are allegations. Sears is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

🚨 Two Indiana parents are facing charges after their 17-day-old baby suffered catastrophic injuries.

Spencer Slentz, 20, and Paige Barrett, 19, both of Howe, Indiana, are each charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in catastrophic injury.

According to court documents, the infant was taken to the hospital on July 17 with what doctors described as non-accidental trauma.

The baby reportedly suffered multiple fractured ribs, a traumatic brain injury with a brain bleed and seizures, and fractures to his right leg.

Doctors expressed serious concerns that the baby might not survive — or could be left unable to sit, talk, walk, or communicate meaningfully, potentially requiring technology to survive long-term.

Investigators say the injuries occurred between July 16 and 17, while the baby was exclusively in the custody of Slentz and Barrett.

Court documents also describe a text message in which Barrett reportedly said she was “abt done” with the baby’s crying.

The parents allegedly found the infant with dried blood around his mouth and labored breathing, but investigators say they did not call 911. Instead, they drove him roughly 30 minutes to a hospital.

He was eventually transferred to Parkview Regional in Fort Wayne and then flown by ambulance to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

And investigators say that after leaving for the hospital, Slentz allegedly texted a neighbor asking them to clean up the house and throw away trash because Child Protective Services was coming.

Investigators later recovered items from the home that reportedly had blood on them, including bedding, a mattress cutting, an air mattress and baby clothing.

These are allegations contained in court documents, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Slentz is scheduled to appear in court again on September 28. Hearing information for Barrett was not immediately available.
