Ranch life in Sierra Valley has changed sharply in recent months. Rancher Paul Roen says nights have turned sleepless as he tries to protect his herd from wolves that keep returning.

Wolves are protected under state and federal law, so even when attacks happen, ranchers cannot kill them. Roen says he accepts wolf protection but wants problem animals removed. State crews have used drones, spotlights, and rubber bullets, but the wolves keep coming back.
