Lipstick left at a crime scene can now help tell the story. 💄

Researchers at Curtin University built the first forensic database of Indonesian lipstick products using FT-IR spectroscopy, correctly identifying individual products with up to 86.5% accuracy.

Sample repacking doesn't always distort your spectra in just one direction, so what happens when it doesn't?

In the latest Chemometrics in Spectroscopy column, Howard Mark & Jerome Workman, Jr. combine their Lagrangian repack-correction algorithm with Gallagher & Watson's clutter suppression framework, whitening calibration spectra to handle multiple directions of diffuse-reflection variability at once, no matter if you're using MLR, PCR & PLS.

Two suspect vehicles, one hit-and-run, & paint that looked identical to the naked eye.

By combining FT-IR, portable Raman & SEM-EDS, researchers broke down the three-layer paint structure from the scene & both suspect vehicles, pinpointing a chemical difference in the third layer that ruled one vehicle out completely.
