It feels like everything happening around me isn’t real.

As I lay here reflecting on everything going on in my life, I ask myself, “How did all of this come to be?”

I was just a kid who dropped out of high school. I never felt like I belonged anywhere. I was shy when it came to talking to people. Sometimes I wondered if what I said even made sense. I struggled with feeling comfortable in my own skin.

All of those things I just listed used to be problems.

So how did I get over them?

I didn’t like school, so today I make learning a priority.

I was shy, so today I talk to as many people as I can.

I worried about what others thought of what I said, so today I practice speaking my mind without constantly second-guessing myself.

By facing my fears, I learned to like who I am and become comfortable in my own skin.

The things that once held me back became the very things that helped me grow.

One thing I’ve learned in life is that you can’t change people, places, or things — you can only change yourself.

The moment I truly understood that, I stopped trying to control situations and people that were outside of my control. I let go of the resentment I was carrying toward others and focused on what I could change: my attitude, my actions, and my response.

Not everyone will think like you, work like you, or see things the way you do. And that’s okay. Peace comes when you stop expecting others to be who you want them to be and start accepting them for who they are.

That doesn’t mean you have to tolerate drama, negativity, or toxic behavior. Sometimes growth means creating boundaries and protecting your peace. When I stopped feeding into the drama, the drama lost its power over me.

Life became a lot lighter when I realized I wasn’t responsible for changing everyone else. My responsibility is to become a better version of myself every day.
