🦻 If you are still processing your own experience, or wish to gain a deeper understanding of other people's different journeys, this is a powerful read.

💪 Written by deaf therapist, martial artist and TEDx speaker, Kerry Tidman. Having overcome adversity in her own life, Kerry has turned difficulty into strength and courage, and she now champions other deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people.

♥️ As the mother of a deaf child, I cannot read Kerry's book, or listen to her speak about her life without being profoundly moved.

🛒 "How Do You Deaf?" is available online from Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, your local bookshop and directly from the publisher, AVID Language.

💥 The characters in our books don't always have an easy time of it, but they always find a way to win through! (It's so important that representation is authentic.)

👍 The pages shown here come from Karen Hardwicke’s wonderful book, "Jack Signs!" (the first in a series of the same name.) Karen is mother to a deaf child (now young adult) and has been a Teacher of the Deaf for over a decade. Her "Jack Signs!" books are all based on true stories. Collectively, they are an ode to sign language, which transformed their family life by giving her son, Jack, a mode of communication that he could fully access.

🛒 The Jack Signs! series is available online from Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, local bookshops and directly from the publisher, AVID Language.

🤟 BSL and ASL versions and additional accompanying sign language resources are available on the AVID Language website:

🦻 Normalising hearing loss involves representation across the media, including in children's books. If information and awareness messaging can be woven gently into storylines, without feeling forced, children will naturally absorb what they're seeing. It's also a great way to encourage spontaneous conversations around hearing loss and deafness.

🎄 This snapshot is taken from my book, "Ling Ling Bird Loves Christmas", which explores the festive season through the five senses, as CI-user Ling Ling Bird and his family discover the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures of Christmas. I wrote this book with the idea that families could read it in the run-up to Christmas, introducing key vocabulary beforehand, allowing children to more fully join in the festive fun when it starts.

🛒 This book is available online from Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Nobel, your local bookshop and beyond, including directly from the publisher, AVID Language.

⭐ It's Deaf Awareness Week in the UK and Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month in the USA!

‼️ Why is deaf awareness so important? Because, while not everyone is deaf, everyone will some day meet someone who is.

📚 If you are seeking books and resources to support your teaching (and learning!), please take a look at the AVID Language collection. We have books for children, and for the parents, carers and professionals who support them.

📙 Our books integrate language development strategies, strong deaf representation and subtle deaf awareness messaging. We support all communication approaches, and feature deaf characters with different hearing technology and none.

🛒 Our books are all available online from Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, and many other bookshops, as well as directly from the publisher, AVID Language.

🛍️ We also have a growing set of book companion resources for use across different curriculum areas in both mainstream and specialist schools, which are available on the AVID Language website www.avidlanguage.com/resources and from Teachers Pay Teachers. www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/avid-language-resources

👏 Well worth a read!

✍️ Prize-winning children’s author and sociologist, Kristin Blakely’s article for the Hearing Health Foundation explores why authentic and aspirational D/deaf representation in books is so important, not just for children with hearing loss but for all children. Facts, figures, lived experience and empirical evidence combine to make this a punchy and insightful read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🗣️ Feedback of the best kind for author and developer of The CONNECT Framework®, Susannah Burden, BSC(Hons), CertMRCSLT, PgDip AVT, LSLS Cert AVT from a fellow practitioner:

“Thank you so much for sharing this fabulous book with me! I read it during my flight home from the EHDI Conference and was so impressed with how well The CONNECT Framework was conceptualized and developed.

The real-life examples and case snap shots presented in the book highlight the incredibly positive impact that focusing on connection first has on a child and their family.

I will be paying this forward by sharing this important resource with families and SLPs far and wide!! Kudos to the author for a job well done!!”

🛒 CONNECT First is available online from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Waterstones, your local bookstore and directly from the publisher, AVID Language.
