The Tech - Avionics Technician, Electronics Technician, Rap Music Artist, Music Producer, Music Publisher, and One of the Owners of Aether Music Group.
Marketing, emotion, sound, and story done right, will make any music career take off. Of course, I had to learn that the hard way.
I'm an electronics technician by trade with a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology. I've been working in electronics since I was about 7 years old thanks to my dad always keeping me in the books and out of the streets.
I'm also a musician in my spare time, writing, recording, mix engineering, and mastering music. Hip-Hop and R&B are my favorite but, I deal with all genres.
My dad is the reason I started learning about online marketing. He was (and still is) pushing marketing books, e-books, videos, and his own lecturing on me so that I might just catch on and actually make a living from online marketing but, instead, I joined the army and did 5 and a half years before I realized I wanted more out of life.
Over the years as I grew up, had jobs, got married, had kids, joined the army, went to war, I tried to maintain my growth in my music but, I've always had to fall back due to jobs, kids, women, hard times, just life in general.
After an honorable discharge in 2013, my focus shift to trying to find some way to make a living that would allow me to have more time with my family. That led me right back to online marketing. I guess I should've listened to pops.
Music has been "my thing" since I was about 11 years old. I started out in the 90's with an old Yamaha keyboard, a small computer microphone, and a dual cassette tape player, switch the tapes back and forth to dub the track, just me and the homies trying to make the type of music we grew up on in the hood. So, I kind of have a 90's hip-hop style.
I've been with a few independent record labels were we had major distribution deals that fell through, rapped with a few groups, did a few shows, produced a lot of different tracks for myself, some of my associates at the time, and paying customers (when I ran a studio at the house).
At this point, I'm just ready to put the business aspect into this music and stop making nickels and dimes, hoping for some miracle to happen. Now, I'm all about marketing this music and making money by any means necessary.
Now, I’ll get into one of the music lessons I’ve learned by putting bits and pieces together from music business books, my dad’s marketing books, and experience. To have good music, you need these four elements I call M.E.S.S. or “Hot MESS” if you will:
Marketing - You need marketing if you want to actually sell anything or make a living.
Emotion - Connect emotionally with your audience or you’ll lose their attention.
Sound - Music (whatever genre) needs to be pleasing to the ear.
Story - Use the first three elements to create a captivating story.
This is my basic blueprint for success with making music, and building a business around it. Of course this is a broad view and all four of these areas can be broken down to considerably in-depth classes on their own.
